Which knot should I use?

Hi guys,

I have some new 8wt line with a loop connection on the end of it. My leader is a 9ft leader without a loop connection on it. What knot would you use to connect the two?

This morning I was using some kind of a clinch knot, but the leader relatively thick and this made for an messy/weak looking knot. Would you just tie the butt end of the leader into a loop and connect the two that way?

Graphics and links would be helpful for me to see as well. Thanks!

-Matt

Actually if you tie a perfection loop on the butt end of your leader, you would be able to connect them using a loop to loop.

Re: Which knot should I use?

Yes, I was thinking a perfection loop. That little demo did it for me, thanks!

Do I need to dab a little drop of super glue on the knot or will it hold ok as is?

Matt, if you'll go to this link for Grog's Fishing Knots - Grog's Fishing Knots Index - it'll walk you through the steps using several forms of animation. It's the best knot resource I know of - too bad I can't take it on the river with me.

Hi Mattrick,

If you tie the Perfection Loop correctly you won't need any glue. Always check to make sure the tag end is at a 90 degree angle to the main line. If it is not you didn't tie it right. You could also use a Surgeon's Loop instead of the Perfection Loop. It is easier to tie but is more bulky.

Frank

Matt: there's a little red book of knots by Harry Nilsson don't know the cover title cause it's off ...been in my fly bag for at least six years, last copy...you can carry it...both because of age, red wine, and high proof single malt I forget and have to look at it...now if I am with a guide and it's his fly...it's his knot not mine

Re: Which knot should I use?

Frank, thanks. The tag end is right about 90 degrees. I thought it looked a little weird, but I'm glad to know it's right.

bonefish, you sound like me with your red wine and single malt, and I'm not even that old. Although tonight I'm enjoying several Shinerbocks......and it's only Tues.... This is a looong week. Glad I'm going to the coast on Fri.

Re: Which knot should I use?

I use a Surgeon's Loop like what Frank mentioned earlier, never had a problem and very easy to tie. The Loop to Loop connection should also be done right. I've seen it done wrong many a times, but once you do it correct the first time, you never do it wrong again.

That is a good illustration FlyMaster shows of the incorrect as well as the correct way to connect a Loop-to-Loop. Unless attention is paid to this, it's likely to end up the incorrect way, as that's the "natural" result of a looped connection between two line/leaders of different stiffness. I would also add that if done incorrectly as shown, not only will the connection be weaker as FlyMaster's linked illustration states, your cast will be more likely to "hinge" at that point also, always a potential problem with a Loop-to-Loop anyway as compared to alternative connections such as a Nail Knot or a Scientific Anglers L2L Connector set-up (the best of all, IMHO).
