i am new to fly fishing and i was wondering how long my leader line should be

pretty sure the rule is 1.5x the rod length. it has something to do with you want the leader to be long enough so that the energy dies down when the fly line turns over the leader on the foward cast so that it lands subtly on the water

Hello Kevin,

Your leader length depends more on what type of fly your fishing with, and the waters your fishing.

Typically if your nymphing you will want your leader to be 1.5 times the depth of the water.
Dries can vary much more, at times on difficult water I have fished up to a 16' leader, and other times as short as 6-8', on average about 12'.
Streamers, sometimes as short as 4', but usually around 6'.
