Magnetic Fly Box

I was making a sammy for lunch today. As I closed the fridge door those little floppy advertising magnets that cover the fridge and hold numerous notes caught my eye. I thought, "Huh, that gives me an idea."
My plastic fly boxes don't have magnets in them, a not necessary but convenient option on some boxes.
I pulled a couple of the 2"x3" mags off the fridge, rearranged the all important notes, and glued them to the inside lids of two of my boxes. Works great!

Re: Magnetic Fly Box

it works good on nymphs and streamers but it will flatten the hackles on a dry ---it keeps the moisture in longer and will rust the hook sometimes---Perrine made some boxes with magnets on one side back in the 70's---i still have a small gold anodized one that i use for bluegill flies

here's a couple.
Shorthaul.
Do you mean that the mag itself leads to the moisture staying longer?

Re: Magnetic Fly Box

the Perrine boxs were perforated and my flies got wet in the box with the magnetic patch---i attributed it more that the box had holes in it but the magnet held the hook flat rather than stuck in foam in an upright position and more water stayed next to the hook on the magnet for a longer period of time, rusting the hook.
i never tried it with a box that sealed better---what you've done , looks good to me.

I've never seen the Perrine boxes, but they sound like they were pretty poorly designed. So the Perrines had no foam? The flies were just held by the magnets?

Re: Magnetic Fly Box

The Perrines just had clips to hold flies, were perforated and were pretty durable. I've still got 3. If you live in the dry rockies the perforations allowed your flies to dry. If you live somewhere humid then your hooks may rust. I still use my Perrines for my large saltwater flies to promote air circulation and for my larger wooly buggers. I have applied a magnetic patch on 2 of my other compartment boxes to hold on to flies on windy days but I don't leave them there. I wouldn't say they were poorly designed but really 2nd gen. boxes that were very affordable and tough.
