Making your own leaders

Anybody making their own leaders?
I was just reading Joni’s blog and saw that she is making her own leaders and remembered a recipe I found in Gary Borger’s book Presentations so I bought a few rolls of mono to give it a shot.
Dry fly leader – for size 10-14 fly. 4 feet of 0.013, 1 foot 0.010, and 4 feet of 4X or 0.007
Dry fly leader – for size 20 or smaller. 1 foot 0.013, 4 feet 0.010,4 feet of 0.007, and 1 foot of 6X or 7X
A 15 foot leader – for size 16. 5 feet of 0.017, 5 feet of 0.013, 1 foot of 0.010, 3 feet of 0.007 and 1 foot of 0.005.
A windy situation 15 foot leader – 10 feet of 0.017, 1 foot of 0.012, 3 feet of 2X and 1 foot of 6X
Nymphing Dead Drift - 4 feet of 0.020, 1 foot of 0.013, 4 feet of 2X. Then add 6-8 inches of 4X tippet. The fly goes on the 4X The shot at the first knot and the indicator on the 0.013

Re: Making your own leaders

I got to try some of your leaders. I am so hooked on Furled leaders right now, they can be used in every situation. I have even used my 6' with 6' of mono/fluoro for nymphing....and I love the way they roll over, specially with two flies.

But I still have and use my Frog Hair leader kit.

Yat- small streams to rivers are perfect for furled leaders (at least for me). And that reminds me of a story.
Once upon a time yesterday, on a small mountain stream, I took the Lami 4w out and a furled leader with 3 ft. of 5x was magic on the water. No drag, just fish. I ain't pushing the wife's leaders, but I'll never go back to extruded mono.
The only time I want no memory- is in my leaders.
Jones, send Yat one.

Yatahey
Joni makes some great furled leaders---

I've tied leaders for many years but ive never used a butt section as light as the top 4---my butt section is at least .021 and sometimes .023 and generally decrease about 3-4 thousandths in diameter while decreasing in length1/3-1/2 of the preceding heavier section---the final 18-36" is tippet of sufficient size and length for fly size and conditions---ill try a couple of those and let you know

Re: Making your own leaders

Just checked out Joni's Frog Hair Leader Kit at Cabela's. Pretty cool kit. Also found this blood knot tool. Tru Blood Knot Tyer
Do you prefer the blood knot to the double surgeons and why? The blood knot is a bear for me to tie.

Re: Making your own leaders

blood knots are preferred since lie straight after tying

Yat, pm me and I will get er done.
I do use blood knots as mentioned because they are straighter. That tool that comes with the kit makes it easy...or at least after the first one or five. In other words it gets easier.

Re: Making your own leaders

On my leaders for steelhead, I start with 30" of 20 or 25 # Amnesia, then drop down to 30" .015 Maxima, then about 15" of .013, then drop down to 1x, about 30" then 3 or 4x tied anywhere from 24" to 48" depending on water conditions.
