Re: New member with an old question....
The only differance is how big do you think or want the flies to be. I dont fish trout anymore and most of the time stay above a size 6 hook for the fighing I do (bass, panfish, pike). The 4&6 that I do have I see a world of differance in them. I tie my own stuff and chose differant hooks depending on what I am needing or wanting to make. Mostly the size 4 long shank has kept me intrested as well as some of the smaller 6s that come precolored. I keep simple small sized flies (wets and streamers) to the size 6 while other things like small clouser minnows and other streamers I use the longer shanked 4. On the other end when I am making the mag pike flies I use a size 1 to a 4/0. there is a big variation on these. I take a look at shaft and hook size depending on size and type of fly. How big are the bugs/nymphs/larva do you find in the waters in your area. If you find a lot of one type of bug that is small, it is likely to say that a larger verstion may get passed up by a shy trout. Matching the hatch would be the best thing you could do since there is little but enough differance between the sizes your looking at.

Re: New member with an old question....
I mostly fish trout (or at least attempt to with my skill level). The size depends alot on the water you are fishing. For example, I mostly fish smaller river in Utah so alot of the bugs are smaller, so I even go to a 16, 18, or even 20 depending on the day and hatch for the flies you are talking about. I hope that this helps. I would talk to a local fly shop for more info on the area.

Re: New member with an old question....
If you get some 10's and some 14's in the generally smaller patterns, I'd say you are well set up.
