I apologize if this question has been asked before, but I am curious, Can you use the RIO sinking tips with RIO Weight Forward Floating Line? I am trying to get out of having to buy a new spool and sinking line for my Lamson reel, I only get to fly fish a couple of times per year,with the exception of bream and bass fishing in my local area. I hope to be able to purchase a couple of these sinking tips which are fairly inexpensive. Will this set up work on a trout stream? Will this make a nymph sink in an effective manner? Thanks for any help that you can provide me.

I tried one & didn't like it at all for streams. You end up having your line sink faster than the nymph & it drags the fly along. Unless you are fishing real slow, deep pools or a lake with a real short leader, IMO thier not worth the trouble. Try using split shot & to fine tune your weight so the fly is just ticking along the bottom use a dab of Tungston paste.

nope---they are made to run by themselves with the grain weight that corresponds to the weight of your line---by attatching it to a weight forward line ,you would end up with double the weight to make your rod work---generally a running line or amnesia line is run as a shooting line.

Rio also makes a leader thats weighted(though ive never used them)---you can try that to get your fly down---i use the heads or a streamer express line by SA---you might also try to tie a length of leadcore trolling line in your leader that works with your casting style and setup.

after rereading your post it sounded like you were trying to use a shooting head with a weight forward but possibly you were talking about the Rio things that i dont use.
