Question reel questions

I have come into possession of the following reels and have no idea as to their worth or the advisability of using them. I am totally new to fly fishing and these were given to me by a friend.
Hardy Bros(alnwick)ltd.-marquis salmon no 1 this reel has an extra spool

orvis madison this reel is about 3 and 1/4 inches in diameter

both of these reel are in excellent shape and both contain line

any help/ information would be appreciated.

Re: reel questions

If the Orvis Madison has "British Made" stamped on it, it's probably worth about $50.

Re: reel questions

go to ebay and search for each reel under Completed Items. you'll get an idea of what those reels have sold for on ebay at least.

as to advisability for using them, i can't say. you're new to fly fishing. do you have gear yet? what and where do you plan to fish?

the madison at 3.25 inches would be ok for freshwater trout in (i'm guessing) 5/6 weight line/rods to light/medium bass fishing to maybe 7wt, possibly 8wt. you could use it for 5wt and under but it would be bigger and probably heavier than desired. still, you'd catch fish.

Re: reel questions

The madison is a good functional, inexpensive reel. If you want to get into fly fishing it is a good starter reel. The hardy, depending on how old it is and the shape it is in could be worth some money...I agree with one of the other posters....look on ebay for hardy marquis reels and see what they go for. Hardy in general will be in the $150 and up rang...the older and how good a shape really determines the price. I'he seen some go in the $400's but they were mostly LRH models
