scott and orvis fly rods

I got a while to do some research on some fly rods to see which one i should pick. I want a good one for delicate presentations and it being able to punch big flies in the wind for trout and it be between 300 and 400 dollars . I don't want one that i'll be regretting in a couple years though.I don't know much about either company so suggestions on both would be very much appreciated.
Thanks to any replies

That's a tall order. Most rods that give a good delicate presentation won't punch big flies into the wind.

Some sort of compromise is needed here, or maybe two rods would work better for you?

Re: scott and orvis fly rods

Hers another old man telling you that Old Man is correct---a lot more can be done by the person casting the rod that just buying a "cannon". Punching a half a chicken into 20kt wind takes some skill with heavier lines and powerful rods. We caught bonefish in the keys in a 30kt wind but were using a 10wt to do so.

A compromise rod will be in the middle somewhere and wouldnt be as light on the water but if you shot above the water and let your fly land on its own wont be as delicate as some rods but its done by the caster not the rod.

Re: scott and orvis fly rods

I have both the Orvis T3 and Clearwater II in 6wt midflex. The clearwater II has a better delicate presentation but has trouble throwing a #2 Double Bunny streamer. The T3 has no trouble with the bigger fly but is not as delicate and runs about $475.00. You may want to look at the Clearwater II in a tip flex for punching big flies into the wind while still having a delicate touch.

Re: scott and orvis fly rods

I had a Scott Eclipse, now if you can find that flex in a TODAY Scott you will have what you need I am sure.
As far as Orvis, I think any of them in a Mid-Flex 7.0 and higher will suit your needs also.
I cast 4" bunny leeches with my 6 wt. Zero mid 7.5 but I also fish #18 dries with this rod.
Again, I am going to say LINE is going to make or break a good rod.

But Two rods is not a bad idea ;-)

Re: scott and orvis fly rods

Joni makes a good point on the Flex rating. My ClearwaterII is a midflex 6.0 and theT3 is a midflex 7.5. The CW II 6.0 can handle smaller streamers but not the big stuff. The T3 7.5 handles my big heavey streamers with no problem.
