Hi Guy,s. I have just got hold of a fine Hardy Perfect and it came with a full spool of a waxed line. It looks like it is braided but I can not tell as it is quite gummed up with what looks and feels like a wax substance. I have cast the line and although it is very old it still cast quite well with a plastic 6wt rod. Can someone tell me how I would clean this line and re treat it for fishing?

Hi reckless,

I started fly fishing with a silk line. Even when it was new it didn't float well and it was way too much work keeping it clean. You couldn't just clean and treat it and go fishing for a day. You had to keep adding floatant if you fished very long. At lunch I would wipe it down and add more floating. It would just be a short time and the tip would be sinking.

It might be a fun project for you but to me it was a pain in the behind. I would much rather spend my time fishing instead of treating my fly line.

What's really bad is fishing in the rain. You can't get it dry to retreat it.

Gotta go with Frank on this one. I paid top $$ for a new one back in 85', thought it would be cool, it didn't take long to get a 444 back on the spool.

I liked the color (goes great with cane) but not the performance. I'm thankful that they have been making vinyl coated line at Cortland since I was born or darn close to it.
