steelhead fishing

went out again today before work to try my luck for steelhead. my trusty 8wt in hand, my waders on, boots, and vest. off down the stream i went. steelies were splashing up everywhere. everything i threw though came up empty handed. after a couple of hours it started to really look like they were hitting something on top. i put on about a size 14 dry fly and threw in. nothing. so i decided to go up stream and try were i was at the first time out with the tfo. on about the 3rd cast i saw the water boil up felt my line go somewhat tight. reached down and gave the line a good pull to set the hook and awaited the fight. alas no fight. i started to strip my line back in to check to see if i didn't break off. and all of a sudden i noticed some resistance. not much but some. as i got my line up to me to my suprise there was what i believe was a trout. i believe it was a small brown or rainbow. not to sure which. now this might not sound like much to anyone else but it was a big deal to me. you see this was my first trout ever. it was only about 5 inches or so but none the less i finally broke the water. i'm planning on going out again in the morning as long as we don't get rained out. gonna try some new flies and hoping for the best.

Re: steelhead fishing

Freeze69,

Have you tried an egg pattern for steelies ? They usually
crush those here in Michigan. Another good steelie fly is
a Jack Gartside "Sparrow". Check out his website:
www.jackgartside.com for the recipe. If you have never
hooked into a steelie before hold onto your 8wt rod,
it's quite a ride. Best of luck, don't give up. Congrats
on landing your first trout, now your hooked, they
are awesome. I am planning a trip tomorrow (Sunday)
to a favorite trout river.

Fish Forever,
Tie One On
