Re: Wearing your waders ?? Yes, or no

Waders in streams and rivers almost all the time, but on lakes and ponds only if it's cold out. If I'm on a raft, kayak or canoe, I never have them with me.

Re: Wearing your waders ?? Yes, or no

Cold and heat doesn't bother me, but being wet does. Most of my fishing is small-med streams from 10,000-12,000 ft. Without waders i'd get pretty scarfed up from sliding down rocky-muddy banks, crawling on my knees etc. I also have a habit of sitting on wet rocks on the stream. I was sitting on a big wet rock in the middle of a stream yesterday eating my lunch. I like that, but it wouldn't be that comfortable without the waders.

I'm not sure Goretex is better than some of the other breathable material, but it does seem to be more comfortable to me. The new Pro Shell in the new Simms is really nice. It seems to be warmer and cooler (if that's possible) than some of the other waders i've tried. I think a good fit in waders is important to be comfortable too. I'm 6'1" with a 32" waist and size #14 boots. Most waders that fit my feet will make me look like Bozo the Clown. The Simms look like they were made for me. If you really like your waders you won't mind putting them on all the time.

Then if I have to stop at the market on the way home from fishing I don't look like a mud ball.

It is cold sure but on 80+ days, it is the best. And yes I stand right in the middle if I need to.

I almost always wear waders, but primarily because I have to get through brush to get to where I'm going, so the waders are more about avoiding poison ivy, bug bites, ticks, etc than about staying warm or dry. I've been thinking I need to get some sort of quick-dry pants that would be comfortable when in the water and would be just enough to keep the ticks and ivy away. I'm open to suggestions on that front.

Hi jcl,

Here are one of the best pants out there. They are not cheap but I think they are worth it. I liked the older model better than the new model but they are still great pants. They are quick drying and may be what you are thinking about. I would not wear them where there are thorns that might catch the material. They come in two lengths and as a short guy I appreciate that. The long inseam has the same waist sizes as listed below but are in 32" length.

Frank

Ex Officio Amphi Pants
Item # 185226

AMPHI PANT BY EX-OFFICIO I wear these pants all summer. I also do my own "washing". Put these in the washing machine, but NEVER the dryer. They quickly drip-dry WRINKLE-FREE. A soft 100% nylon, that feels like cotton. A sewn-in "mesh brief" allows you to wear these pants underwear-less. After wet wading, you will be dry in minutes after leaving the water. No wet cotton underwear to "drip". If you're buying a pair just for wearing around town, you can cut-out the mesh brief if you like. There is a zipper in front PLUS the only pant that includes a belt. Perfect "drape", even if they are not your perfect length, because of the button & loop on the cuff. Graphite mesh inserts at hand pocket openings and mesh "mobility panel" at the knee. This is my work/travel/wading pant all summer. If there was anything better, I'd be wearing it. If it's hot, I'll have 'em on when you call(ask for Ed). Color is Light Khaki. (B) AMPHI PANT - Short Inseams SIZED WAIST/INSEAM: S(28-3-1/28), M(32-3-5/30), L(36-3-9/30), XL(40-4-3/30), XXL(44-4-6/30)

Re: Wearing your waders ?? Yes, or no

Right you are Frank. With Orvis once owning Ex Efficio, I did score a couple of pairs of these pants for a great price. I wear them under my waders all the time.
As for the shorts/long pants, I went with Reddington from Sportsmen's Warehouse. Under $40 and a great pair of pants.
My problem is the length but the opposite of Frank. I need a 36" inseam, but I can get by with 34" and high top shoes for wading.
The material is thick enough for the brush, as far as ticks, I saw my first on this year. It was on my Hubbies belly. He was kneeling in some long grass over Memorial day trying to start a BBQ. That sucker feaked me out! It was flat however so, just got there. Lit up a cigarette and touched it, he fell right off. Never thought anything good could come from a cigarette!
Anyway, he was wearing levis and a t-shirt, so I guess if they want a ride, they will find a way.

Re: Wearing your waders ?? Yes, or no

Thanks for the tips -- looks like just what I had in mind.

And, yeah, ticks can find ways to get on you no matter how you're dressed. I've had two in me this year (but both from around my house and not from fishing), and one mild but ugly spider bite (on a wet-wading in shorts day, of course).

I use Reddington shirts. It sounds like the same material. Just wash and let drip dry. I love them.

Re: Wearing your waders ?? Yes, or no

Hi ...new guy here

One of the great things about fly fishing is that you get to wade around in a river without too many people thinking you're a nut.
In the heat of the summer I take full advantage of that and do my wading wet.

Because of the abundant bank-side poison ivy in this area I always wear long pants.
Normally, Dickies brand uniform pants that I pick up at a thrift shop
(yes, I'm a cheap SOB)
They're quick drying, won't hold a stain, and can take a beating
...did I mention they were cheap?

On my feet I wear canvas type wading boots that I bought "true size"

Now if I could only keep my socks from turning black from the mud....
