Re: where to fish the au sable???

the flys only (no kill) water on the mainstream is an 8 mile stretch and starts at louies landing to wakely bridge---my favorite stretches are from thendara rd to stephan rd bridge (8 hrs) or from pine rd to the powerline (3-4 hrs) or the lower T-U section and just fish around and wade back (1-4 hrs)---i tried to go from pine to wakely bridge and that was 12 hrs and we really didnt cover the last 1/2 very well---every stretch has something special--if the hatch was on, youll know where the fish are but in between hatches work the seams and the deadfalls

Stop and see Rusty at the Gates Au Sable lodge at stephan rd bridge and he can dial you into what you could expect to see happening---the fly shops motto " If we dont have it ---you dont need it"

Panfisher1125

Hattrick here! The Au Sable has three rivers the Main branch, the North Branch and the South Branch. I like the north branch best.

I've fished a number of spots on all three Branchs. Your first stop should be at Rusty Gates on the Au Sable. Rusty runs a fine Orvis Fly Shop and Lodge right on the main Branch, at Stephans Bridge. Take us72 out of Grayling to Stephonsfive, six miles, give or take some.

You can gear up on flys and ask where to fish that day. At Rusty's it all about the flying. He has never steared me wrong.

Try his web site at www.rustygatesausableriver that should get you close.
if not try Michigan Fly Shops.

Good Luck

Kelly (Hattrick)
