I moved down to Lexington, SC about 3 months ago. I have a creek running from a small lake behind my house and the creek is 12 miles long, hence the name 12 Mile Creek, but I can only fish about 2-2 1/2 miles of it because the wood cover is so thick. I fished about 2 miles of the creek and only caught one small sand trout?!?! I am about 15 minutes away from Lake Murray but I don't like to fish lakes at all. I went exploring and saw the Saluda River, which looks like you can't take a step in it without being up to your neck in water. So the questions I have are these: Is there anyone from my area on here? Does anyone know of any other small streams or wadeable spots on the rivers around here?
I am very big on wading while fly fishing and am going crazy with just one creek to fish. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank You Guys.

Hi fish4life, well how about a pontoon boat and float that stream with deep water. Even a float tube would work. Pontoon fishing is very close to the same as wading but you can cover a whole lot more water. There is also trout and smallmouth fishing in North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. Some real good trout fishing in Tennessee. ---------Frank

Frank is right, to have fly fishing fun in an area like that where the rivers carve the dirt out into deep mud bottomed streams and lakes, a personal float boat will be needed. Most of them on the market that go for over $60 will work pretty well, provided that you're under 230 lbs. ---------------------------------------------------- Your use of "sand trout" threw me off, btw. Round here, a sand trout is a saltwater fish, and I figured you were on the coast.

Moved away from SC in 2004. Use to fish for trout in northwest corner above Greenville. Not many streams where you can wade and cast. A lot of small streams that are good for what I call "flip and float" A lot of underbrush and not a lot of stream maintenance. For good Carolinas fly fishing, my best friend and I use to go to Cherokee Reservation. All the fish on the reservation are hatchery trout and the tribal fish managers prefer that you keep all the fish you catch. Other than that, there are many fine streams and rivers in the area for open water fly fishing. And one of my favorite is the Cataloochee in Smokie Mt. NP.

There are several areas on the Saluda River that can be waded when the water release below the dam is low. My suggestion is to check out this web site, www.saludatu.org. You will find a lot of info about fishing the Saluda below Lake Murray Dam.
