some gills and a rock bass

no size really but still ahd fun today. the water is very low as you can see in the pic. its like 1/3rd of the river left! so i decided to take the 3wt and top water fish for some gills. used a adams fly and caught 2 right off the bat in this shady spot in the 3rd pic then lost 2 more. then I caught this rockbass a lil farther upstream. the river is crappy this year so far. nothing of any size and only a few holes to fish. I used to get a chub on every cast and now nothing! oh well. at least it was a nice day out and i got some decent pix.

Re: some gills and a rock bass

I had a similar experience over the weekend. I knew the river was ridiculously low, but I figured, what the heck, I could at least get in some casting. The odd thing was I discovered a stretch with some shad in it, so now I have to get some shad flies and go back, since I've never caught a shad before.

I will. I know they're in the river, so I should at least keep a handful of flies for them on hand at all times. Who knows what might happen?

Re: some gills and a rock bass

GMcFly, is that the Vermillion River? A friend and I fished a bit of it a few weeks ago. We caught a few smallies a ways upstream from Vermillion. The water was slow and stained.

Re: some gills and a rock bass

I live just south of Cleveland. That was the first time I've fished the Vermilion, though I used to dock a boat there. We fished a section adjacent to a city or county park. Also farther upstream from some public access points.
