I've never really fished the flats exclusively for permit (I've had a few shots), but I think that would be pretty neat. Tarpon would be another favorite. I've taken them up to 165 on fly.

Re: Favorite Saltwater Species?
New member here so be kind please!!!
I'm a bonefish mon, myself. Just love the challenge of the hunt and cast and that first blistering run back to deep water! I chase permit when available but wish they would eat the fly more often! I like tarpon as well, but the babies while having a great grab and aerial show seldom get into the backing,,, bigger tarpon now they are something else!!! Other fish worthy of honorable mention for me? Snook are a cool fish to catch. Jacks are great fun and often save the day when you need something to get your backing wet! Cudas are a challenge on fly tackle as well. Haven't done enough red or striper fishing to consider them as favorites (yet)! All that said second place in my books has to be sharks (Blacktips and lemons) once they get over 4 feet long! A 4-5 foot black tip gives nothing to a tarpon of the same size and a large lemon is real test of wills! Guy |

Re: Favorite Saltwater Species?
I'm with the Aroostook man..... I'm guesiing another Mainer.
Stripers! Although Trout are just as fun for me. If I feel like a heavy fight, and excitement I'll be out looking for blues and stripers, but when I feel like challenging my presentation and more delicate casting skillls, I'll be hunting for Trout or Salmon. |
