Glass!
For those that are not into glass rods, they are a blast.
But, there is two different kinds of glass. There is the "E" glass that is slower more noodlie like Lamiglass, Mc Farland, Eagle Claw etc. Then there is "S" glass that is a little faster like Steffen Brothers, Diamond Glass, etc. Along with different tapers like Parabolic. Recently I found another Glass in the lower price range that is sweet as heck. Sportsmen's Warehouse sales them as a combo, with a reel I am not familiar with but it seems okay. The reel/rod combo sells for $65. or so. The rod is W.W. Griggs and comes in 8', 8 1/2' and 9' 5/6 weight. Normally I would be a little hesitant in a 9' glass, but this is not ordinary glass. It is an "S" glass and faster than most. I have tried this rod with 5, 6, 7 weight line and it loves them all. A little faster with the 5, but still a MED/FAST action. Much like Plastic. The guides are nothing to write home about but still good, Plus has a nice BAMBOO look to it. Here is the 8' with the South Bend reel on it. ![]() Oh yeah, it is NOT made in China.

Re: Glass!
The reel in the picture is an older South Bend, the one that comes with the rod is really alright.
New update on the rod however, and this could turn you off or get your interest into second gear. It turns out it is a Glass rod with PLASTIC/GRAPHITE incorporated in it. I thought it was too fast for glass so I went to the source. I think it is the center section that is graphite. It does create a rod like nothing else. It is snappy, but strong in the butt. I am really hooked on this rod and that is coming from a Winston lover. I sure wish it came in a 3/4 I would be in heaven!

Re: Glass!
I have a bunch of glass rods including some of the better vintage ones
The other day I was in my local W*lmart and for whatever reason I was drawn to the tackle section specifically to see if they had the Eagle Claw glass rods marked down ...Well they did.. I told myself I wouldn't buy one unless they were less than 10 bucks ... Well they were..... they were $9.... I couldn't help myself Maybe I'll fish it, maybe I'll give it away I don't know These are good rods for bushwackin' small streams Not fancy, not a great caster, but well worth the small investment

Re: Glass!
Joni,
I'm confused. The multi piece glass rod actually has a mid section of graphite and plastic? Is this a new breed? Or a ... Oh, h*ll! I don't know!!!!! Auntie Em |

Re: Glass!
From the feed back I got on Fiberglass forum, this has been done before. Kind of old school, from what I understand with UGLY STIX.
I am guessing it is the SCRIM that is graphite. It would give the rod more a parabolic action. I also heard that the new HARDY glass was going this way.

Re: Glass!
Back in the early days of graphite many rods were built with 95-98% graphite for stiffness and a fiberglass scrim for strength
Uglysticks were different. They have a graphite core covered with fiberglass
