Can somebody please give a discription of the differences between fast, medium and slow action rods, and what they would be used for

Re: Rod Actions

Here's a good explanation.

Moderators, maybe this is a good one to move to the 'equipment faq'?

It looks a lot like a rod question to me.

Re: Rod Actions

I got that part... but in the interest of building the FAQ section, this is pretty block & tackle information...

Re: Rod Actions

Hi to all,

Some good information there but we need original information to put into the FAQ or get the other sites permission.

It is good basic information and I will work up something to put in the FAQ but it all takes time. If anyone wants to put together the information I will post it. That goes for any basic information that will be helpful to our members.

Frank

Re: Rod Actions

That's a good article. I like fast action rods for long casts and for turning over larger and heavier flies like clouser minnows and other subsurface flies. They also have an advantage when you're using a sink-tip line. Also, fast action rods excel in fast moving currents for a variety of reasons. I like medium action rods for dry fly presentations, roll casting, and a general, all purpose rod. I've never cast a slow action rod...I think these are only offered in bamboo? Medium-fast action rods tend to vary between manufacturers. Some are marketed as having soft tips to protect tippets, some are marketed as an all around fly rod. Most medium-fast action rods I've cast have been Sages and they felt more like fast action rods to me, although just not quite as stiff as a fast action rod.
