Unassembled length of 4 piece 8.5' rod?

I'm looking at a 4 piece 8'6" rod to take on an extended vacation. I'm wondering if such a rod could be packed into a very large suitcase? I realize that differences in manufacturers may indicate differences in section lengths. For the sake of argument, let's just say that a 5 piece rod is not an option.

The problem is that the first few days of the vacation will be at a wedding in Detroit, while the balance of the vacation will be spent in Montana and Wyoming. I'm trying to pack as lightly as possible.

Any thoughts? Opinions? Experiences?

Thanks

Re: Unassembled length of 4 piece 8.5' rod?

I pack two 4 pc 9' rods in a large duffle bag to avoid carry on on airlines all the time---but my preference is to send them by ups a week ahead and not carry them at all.

My 4 piece, 8'6", 5 wt fits easily into either of my wheeled duffle bags, as does my 3 piece, 8'3", 3 wt, although the later is a tight fit. Neither will fit into the regular hard side suitcase I own, which, IME, are not as long as the wheeled duffle bags.

I ship some rods UPS ahead of time and carry a couple 9' 4 piece rods diagonally in my large suitcase. You shouldn't have a problem with an 8-1/2 footer.

Re: Unassembled length of 4 piece 8.5' rod?

Thanks to all. I have decided to pick up a Cabela's Stowaway 5 piece rod. I've heard some good things about them. A four piece is still just a little long for my purposes, and I would guess shipping a rod UPS ground from Dallas to Red Lodge, Montana wouldn't be much cheaper anyway.
