Re: what line?

I would snap up one of the Ross Rythym's that's being closed out currently. Great reel with a great drag and plenty light for its size.

Line is trickier, especially for salmon fishing. A floating line will be easiest to cast, but not always what is needed to get flies down to the fish. A Multi-tip line would be the best single solution, but you'll see some chime in that they don't like having the loop connections to deal with and what-not. A sink tip line would probably be what is used most, but there is a huge variety in the lengths and sink rates of the sinking section on the lines out there.

I would say you're best off with a multi-tip line.

That said, I've never fished one. Good Luck!

Re: what line?

Last season I fished almost exclusively with a multi-tip line for Salmon without a problem, it was a decent solution. This year I've been using the Sharkskin line for salmon and have had great success with that. Took some getting used to a floating line for salmon, but once I figured that out I've really enjoyed the setup. So far I've found there isn't anywhere that I would normally fish for salmon with a sink-tip that I can't fish with a floating line with a little bit of practice.

Re: what line?

The type and weight of line you should choose will be based partially on how long the rod is. As the standard weight grain window is based on a 9' rod. If you purchased a 10' you will need more grain weight to load up the rod more easily. Sage should list a grain window for your rod on their web site. From there check out the mfg. web site for your grain info. An example being that most standard SA lines in a 8wt run a window of 202 to 218 grains. So you may find that this works or you may need to go to a 10-12 weight line. I personally would also look at something with a shorter heavier head.
