Winston Vapor vs Sage Fli?

Considering gettin a 10' 7wt for river steelheadin. Anyone have any experience with either (or both) of these? Is there a rod of similar specifications/price range you'd choose over these? Appreciate any input I can get on this!

Tom

Re: Winston Vapor vs Sage Fli?

I just purchased a Sage FLi (4wt) & love it !!!I was informed by a respected guide I know & trustnot to consider a Winston over a Sage. Maybe thatwas just his own opinion, but I believe what he saidwas true. The Vapor, if I'm correct, is the lowest end of the Winstonline, whereas the FLi is a step above their lower end. All in all cast both rods.See how each works for you, how it feels in your hands. How it casts with your style. Then decide which maybe best for you.Tie One On

Re: Winston Vapor vs Sage Fli?

Old thread I know but since I have owned both rods, I thought I'd chime in for those who may be in the market and choosing between the two.

First, the Vapor is not the lowest of the Winston Line. That would be the Ascent. Much like the Launch and Fli from Sage in terms of being different actions and price points.

Second, the Fli and Vapor are completely different fishing tools. The Fli is much faster and stiffer than the Vapor which is a medium speed mid to full flex rod.

I don't see any reason for shying away from a Winston vs. Sage. They are both good choices and eliminating either from consideration would needlessly limit options for someone who may prefer a different taper and action

I now have two Vapors; 486-4 and 590-4. the 486 is the sweetspot for that blank in my opinion. I've cast both seven weights (on grass). Their characters seem to hold true to the lower weights. I might lean closer to the Fli for that application (steelhead) but I still prefer a softer rod.

I'll go with the Winston every time.
