3 wt reel

Hey guys, I just got my 3wt 7'6" rod blank to put together and I will need a reel to go on it before long. What do you guys think I should put on it? I have something in mind but want to hear what you would do first. What line to go with it also.

Martin Mohawk River. Super sweet reel, fully machined and looks great too. Can get them on Ebay new for about $50.

Re: 3 wt reel

Well, it depends on how much you want to spend.

If I had my choice, I'd get a Galvan OB 1 or OB 2. I just put a new OB 1 on my StreamDance 2wt. It such a sweet and smooth reel.... and they're simply gorgeous!!!

On the other hand, since reels play only a minor role on lightweight rods, I might just get a Stone Creek Voyager at only $42. Good reel with no frills.

That's both ends of the spectrum

Re: 3 wt reel

I have a Galvan OB-1 on my Sage SP 386, and personally would use no other reel for it as it seems to give the rod a perfect sense of balance.

catchya later,

Re: 3 wt reel

I tend to agree with the comment :
how much are you willing to spend ?

For me personally, I would buy a simple reel.
With that weight rod you are not going to be
landing 15# steelhead, but small trout or maybe
panfish, so why pay for a disc drag that you
really won't need.

I grew up using a Pflueger 1492. Simple reel &
it does not cost you $100, but more like $30.

It all boils down to personal choice, like most
descisions on fly fishing equipment.

Re: 3 wt reel

Alright, I was looking at the Orvis Battenkill BBS. I love the sound of the Galivan reels but they are too pricey for me.I'm looking in the $100 range. Still nothing set in stone yet. What about line?

I agree with Curtis, cortland 555 dyna-tip is probally the best 3wt line available, although I also use the orvis wonderline and it is also a great line.
