Automatic Fly Reel

Has anyone ever tried using an automatic fly reel? I have seen them in magazines and almost want to try one. Most of the reviews that I have read say that tehy are not very good. Does anyone have an opinion? Is it worth the time to use one.

Re: Automatic Fly Reel

John,
I have used them in years past. The disadvantages in my mind are the weight and the maintainence requirements. When they get exposed to grime and sand they become troublesome-even nonfunctional.

Re: Automatic Fly Reel

I have one on a wall-hanger cane rod.
They are heavy for sure but I've seen them put to two good uses lately... one is for getting some of our wounded soldiers back in the game through Project Healing Waters and the other use is some owners of Ausable river boats find them handy while fishing and poling down the river.

NO! They are junk, heavy, basically no drag, not fun to fish with. Not worth the time wasted fishing with these $20 reels.

I fished with a Automatic while I had my grandpa's Hardy LRH in my tackle box that he gave me because I did not know any better (this was when I was 14)

Re: Automatic Fly Reel

Probably my favorite aspect of fly fishing is the fact that there are no gears or other mechanical things between me and the fish--besides a gear-less reel, but I consider that a bare minimum.
