I need a new reel...

I just got my first real fly rod. It's a Sage Launch 9' 4wt. But now I need a reel. Any suggestions? I only fish mountain rivers and streams in Colorado and am looking to spend around $100.00

Thanks

The Cortland endurance would be a good one. A well maintained used (to be under $100) Ross Cimarron would be a great one too. They're machined from barstock aluminum right there in Montrose, CO.

Truthfully you probably don't need an expensive reel to fish a 4wt. Landing a big trout or steelhead on a 6wt or 7wt, now that is a different ball o wax altogether. The sound of a fish pulling line hard on a mechanical drag is just musical. I use a Sage 3wt with an Orvis Mid Arbor reel and I have been happy with the Orvis mid arbor. The Orvis may be a reel to look at for your 4wt. On a 6wt I use a Ross or Lampson.

Re: I need a new reel...

Here's a place I came across that may have something a little higher end, but at a lower/closeout price.

Fly Shop Closeouts

I try to stay away from there as much as I can, since I don't "need" anything

Re: I need a new reel...

I have also purchased a new Sage just recently & did a lot of
debating on what reel to go with my new 9' 4wt 4 piece FLi.

Back & forth on weight/price, etc. I settled on a Ross Cimmaron.
( Slightly more than $100, but worth it ) I purchased the bronze
colored one to match the bronze rod. I works like a dream casting,
even with a tandem rig. You might want to check with The Full
Creel, this sites care taker, he should be able to set you up.

Enjoy your Sage,

Tie One On

Re: I need a new reel...

check out the orvis battenkill 3/4 for your 4 wt. works fine for my stream fishing and only costs about $79. the orvis BBS is better quality though the standard battenkill with stamped metal should work fine for years.

Re: I need a new reel...

Just to clarify, the standard Battenkill is Cast from aluminum, not stamped. Most cast metal reels can be called decent, almost no stamped reels can. A typical example of a stamped reel is a Pflueger Medalist, or the godawful contraptions included with the cheapest combos at Wally World.

And now, for once, it can be said that I spoke up on behalf of Orvis.

Re: I need a new reel...

I purchased a Ross Flywater for under 100 bucks and have been very pleased with it so far. I believe it's cast aluminum.

Re: I need a new reel...

Take 30$ and get an Okuma Sierra.

Fantastic reel with a great drag system. Smooth and well put together. You will never need anything more on mountain streams.
