Yes, I will be in Kodiak from the 11th to the 21st. of July. Hopeful of landing some reds.
BACKUP PLAN!!!==== Charter Boats!!! And, at least one guided tour.. Have some folks on the island who are going to steer me toward the fish,,, hope they are good drivers!!

Halibut is going for about 10bucks a pound around here. Chinook is probably similar!!!

But, I will try to get into the water once for some diving and maybe even a day of whale watching (of course if they are watching me, then they saying the same thing "what a big one he is!!)

After some seaching, I think I have chosen the reels to bring up North. I like the line capacity of the Teton reels, so they will be coming with me.. Plus, they are American made and have a good warranty.

Hi Joe,

The Teton is a good choice for the money. One feature is they sell both small arbor and large arbor spools for the same reel. This gives you a lot of flexibility using the same reel for fresh water and salt water.

Kodiak has a lot of options for fly fishing. Your friends should be able to help you locate some on the road system. Your best bet is a fly-in but that is not real cheap at todays rates. Your friends may know of a flying service that will take you on a day trip for not a lot of money.

from my experience 100 plus tarpon on teton 12 large arbor 'cause i wanted to see if i could fish cheap keys for tarpon..put the abel 4n away put the Ross bg canyon 8 away..suffered the slings and arrows from my guide...caught the fish but not without losing the spool in my hand 'cause i touched the spool eject tab while palming the spool...recommend that you cut off the spool release tab ...you can remove spool with a pick if need be...but you don't want the spool in your hand with those sash weight salmons

I will be doing the road system solo when I am not on a halibut charter, or riding the ATVs to Saltery.

I do want to do a fly out. That is one of the things I need to get worked out since I am going alone. See if I can get matched up with a lite group.

Oye!! That sounds interesting when there is a fish on, a big fish at that!!

I will keep it in mind when/if I palm the reel. I brought the Battenkill LA back tonight. I asked why the spools didn't go disco as well. No answer.. But, the salesman wanted me to buy a Mach VI, or a Battenkill LA.. I didn't pay that much for the Teton Specialist I have. Granted, I do like those two ORvis reels. I do love the Vortec!! IT is Purdy!!!!!! But, the reality, I don't want to go into hock just to catch fish ((too late,, you should see the spreadsheet numbers on this trip!!! ARGH!!!))

Hey Joe,

It sounds like you will be fishing Saltery Creek. Be careful, if there are salmon in the river the bears will be around too. Make sure you have some pepper spray in a pocket. Don't get one of those little dinky cans. Get the big one that is about the size of a big can of WD-40. You will have to be extra careful fishing alone.

Just my opinion: for tarpon reels i have abel 4n, Ross BG Canyon 8, Teton 12LA and lastly Made in England Mach VI...now if i would have been patient i would not bought the Ross Teton and Mach but would have bought the new largest vortex...i have the 5/6 early model great usa machining use it on an old 8"9" sage rplx bonefish...imho the best machining and workmanship...if you can bench press 100lb then look for an early model vortex largest 11/12 or even 12/13

I remember when the Vortex came out and it weighed a ton compared to some other reels. Do you know who makes the Vortex. Have you see the Nautulas S reels. If so, how does it compare to the Vortex.

As for who by business ID no but I asked an Orvis customer rep about a year plus ago, regarding the Machs, what reels are still being made USA and was told only Vortex in Mass or Conn. as I recall...have not checked to see if the new model is still USA but since the prices of the new models are in the high five and six I am guessing still USA...was asking 'cause I wanted a Mach VI but noticed a price drop which usually and did signal chinese...found old inventory, an England made, for same price store in keys.
Yes i've handled the old florida/nautilus...the design and machining is excellent but then it's Mustad...as you can see from my selection of tarpon reels with the exception of the 4N which is old model solid spool/frame...in me old age I like light weight large diameter spool reels....was considering both the Ross BG 8 and the Nautilus 12T and 12S...but Ross had a model change and the reel sale price for the Ross was 300 comp Nautilus 550 and 590...at least by specs the Ross BG Canyon 8 is, i believe, the lightest big game 4.75 diameter spool reel.
