Love my CFO I, which I currently use with a 3 wt. T3. Thinking of matching it with a 8'6" Helios 4 wt. I've been advised I can push my CFO I to accommodate a 4 wt. line without difficulty, and that it would be a great match for the 4 wt. Helios. Has anyone tried this? Thanks.

I just recieved my CFO 1, and if you use a double taper 3 weight line, there is no room for backing. I'm not sure how it would do with a 4 weight forward taper. By the way, it is a little jewel-- I can't wait to give it a spin!

The reel has been around since the early seventies. The original prototype made by Stan Bogdan of NH is at the American Museum of Fly Fishing. For the first twenty years it was made for Orvis by Hardy, then with Orvis' aquisition of British Reel Works it continued to be made by Orvis in England along with some other popular reels like Sci Anglers System reels. The last couple of years find it being made in Asia.

Just an aside... the name came from Charles F. Orvis' initials.

The CFO's are great values in a classic reel. You can certainly land anything that swims in fresh water with a god click and pawl reel.

One quick note, I don't believe the SA Systems were ever made by any body but Hardy in England. The later Systems two was a BFR, but that was a totally different modern reel. At one point Hardy was making the CFO, Hardy Marquis and the SA System at the same time. Chances were if you saw a fine reel on a trout stream, it was a Hardy (the late 70's)

mhclayton. You could always cut the DT in half. That way you would be able to get more backing on, plus have a spare line.
