Ross Reels International

I am thinking of buying one of Ross Reels basic models.
Can someone give me a clue regarding quality. Do they run true and do the spools have play on the spindle etc?
Also, where is the best place to get one from mail order.
I would mention I am in the UK.
Regards
iwalton

Hi iwalton, I have not ever owned a Ross Reel but I have looked at quite a few and they have good quality. It has a lot to do with how much you are paying and how you are going to use it. We are lucky to have some of the best reels ever made available to use today. Computer controlled machines have greatly improved the quality of todays reels.

Re: Ross Reels International

The "International" versions put out by Ross are made overseas, (not in the USA, unlike their other reels) hence the name. When Ross first began this effort, the int'l reels were made by the same reel company based in the UK that made the Orvis branded reels for so many years. If I recall correctly, that operation has since moved to China. The products they offer seem to be of near if not equal quality to those formerly made in the UK, (no offense intended) but there now seems to be a bit more variety of both features and appearance. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Though I have not fished or owned one of the Ross International reels, what I know about Ross is that they would not put their name, in any form, on a crap product.

Re: Ross Reels International

Hey I am pretty new to the site but have a lot of exp. with Ross Reels, from the Fly Cast to the Evolution. As you know the new models are all large arbor but yes the less expensive models are the same "Ross" quality. I used the Flywater reel for several years before upgrading to the Evolution on all 3 of my rods.

Re: Ross Reels International

Hi Nate,
Yes I like the look of the new reels. The ones I can afford are not availble in the UK. So I enquired about buying one from the US but I was quoted £35 postage so I am thinking about it.

Re: Ross Reels International

I have the Evolution on my 5wt. It is a high quality reel with a smoooth drag, that is until it gets wet in freezing weather. They have the little plastic pieces on the spool that engage for the drag. When they get wet in freezing weather, they don't move and then you got problems. Would I pay $280 for another one? Nope!

Re: Ross Reels International

I own two Ross reels & love them. They have never
failed to perform for me. ( I have a Cimmaron CLA 1.5
on my 4wt Sage FLi & a Cimmaron on my 5wt Scott )

I might suggest one route would be to look at the Full
Creel website which is the fly shop of the administrator
of this site. Steve maybe able to help you. Secondly,
you may try Cabelas website. Both maybe able to set
you up with a Ross reel of your choice.

I was in th UK this time last year & found a real nice
Shimano fly reel that I considered for my 4wt, but could
not get it here in the states.

Like some of the other comments Ross are great reels,
