Rio Selective trout line peeling...
Hey everyone,
A while back I had made a topic asking for suggestions on what type of flyline I should get for my rod. I went with a 5wt DT RIO selective trout line. I really like the line and how it loads my rod. However, my first time out I have noticed in a couple of places that some very fine spagetti like strands (about 1-3") had peeled back (about 30 feet from the tip). I wish that I would have took a picture, but I didnt have my camera with me on the river. What is going on with my line? Is this a maufacturers defect? Is this a common problem with flylines? Will this affect the floatation of my line? I can feel almost a slight flat spot on the line in places. I am certain that I didnt step on the line, since I noticed the problem within the first few casts using the brand new line. I really like this line and how it performs but am disappointed with this problem. Any input is greatly appreciated Thanks |

Re: Rio Selective trout line peeling...
Hi Roast,
That does not sound like it is normal. Follow Eric's advise with the cotton ball test. If you have a bad guide the cotton will catch on the defect. Below is an Email address for Zack at Rio. Send him an Email and explain your problem. You might want to check out the guides first so you can eliminate that problem. I would bet that is the first thing Zack will ask you. Let us know what you find out. zack@rioproducts.com

Re: Rio Selective trout line peeling...
I've seen lines and line guards destroyed by people who strip line off of the reel with each false cast.
That gets me about the same as someone scratching their nails on a chalkboard! Not saying that's the problem here but just look at the sharp angles a line must take when doing that. It can't help! |

Re: Rio Selective trout line peeling...
I'd also check your reel to see if there's any rough/sharp spots on it that could be abrading the line. I bet that or a guide on the rod is the culprit.
Then again, if a line's coating is going to delaminate, I'd expect it to happen in the hot months of the year. Did you ever leave the reel/line in a hot vehicle?

Re: Rio Selective trout line peeling...
Hey,
Just thought that I would give everyone an update on the troubles I had with the selective trout line. I checked my guides and there were no sharp edges that could have peeled the coating. I sent it back to Rio for inspection and they ended up sending me their brand new selective trout II line. Originally they said they were going to repair it, but they ended up giving a replacement. A big thumbs up to Zack at Rio for helping me out. Their customer support has been excellent and won't be forgotten. Thanks to all those who gave their suggestions and advice on this forum, I really appreciate it ![]() |

Re: Rio Selective trout line peeling...
As has been mentioned, it could be the rod guides, it could be the line guard on the reel, it could be the way the line is stripped from the reel. I've seen those things damage fly line more than once. I'd check those things first.
If all is well with the rod and reel, it also could be the line. I had two Rio lines peel off the core like a banana after less than a dozen casts. I also saw the same thing happen to someone else with a brand new Rio line. The good news is Rio promptly replaced the lines. This is not any bad reflection on Rio, but rather a positive testimony. Problems can and do happen with any product. It's how it's handled that matters.
