Arkansas River Fishing Report 6/1/05

Salida Super 8
Arkansas River Report 6/1/05
Salida, Colorado

The Arkansas River has experienced a peak to runoff and has now receded to a flow of about 1700 cfs at Salida with fair to good visibility. While significant snowpack remains in the high country, it will take a spate of very hot weather to bring the flows back up to a level where the river becomes unfishable. With each passing day, such an occurrence becomes less likely. And so, while we don’t know exactly how things will play out, the river is fishing well now and we are back in gear for the summer season!

As one looks at the river, there are several different approaches one can take. On the upper river above Granite, the caddis hatch has resumed and we are seeing blizzard type conditions in the Hayden Meadows area. Just as with the spring hatch, results can vary with the day but there have been consistent reports of large numbers of bugs in the evenings. The flow above the confluence with Lake Creek is around 300 cfs. From the Granite Gorge down to Browns Canyon, the flows vary from 1100 to 1500 cfs and conditions are good. If you saw the Charlie Meyers article in the Denver Post on Wednesday the photos shown were from that section of river. Dry-dropper rigs with a big buoyant dry and large (14-12) copper johns Arkansas River Fishing Back on Track!

Great Time to Escape… Baloonavista is Here! The Super 8 is perfectly located in Salida to provide a great few days away. Balloonavista is scheduled for the weekend of June 10-12. From Stone Bridge on down to Cotopaxi, the clarity is fair with flows of 1600 1800 cfs. This stoneflies are really starting to turn on in this section – our trips yesterday encountered both golden stones and yellow sallies in good numbers. Between the clarity and the current, working the edges is imperative. However, most of the fish are concentrated in that narrow band so it is pretty easy pickings if you can get into position. Without question, this is a prime time to be float fishing the river – stones and streamers along the banks will turn a lot of fish. This is the time of year when the biggest fish counts from a boat can be had – it requires the ability to consistently put the fly right on the edge and a strong, fast mend but the results can be tremendous and explosive. Fighting our browns in this fast current is a hoot!

We encourage folks to call us at 719-539- 4223 or visit our fishing conditions page at www.arkanglers.com prior to coming down as conditions could change. But at this point, the fishing is back on track and….there is nobody here taking advantage of it!
