Question Beadhead build-up...

Hi-

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions for tying beadhead nymphs, etc...? Specifically trying to lessen the build-up of thread directly behind the bead when tying off materials. Is having this small segment of thread (behind the bead) generally accepted and normal (probably being too paranoid on my end)?

Thanks,
Sesro1978

Hi sesro1978,

It is hard to judge without seeing a photo of your beadhead nymph. It would also help to know what size your are tying and what thread you are using. All of these things have something to do with your problem or if you even have a problem.

Re: Beadhead build-up...

When I tie a beadhead after I put the bead up to the eye I'll wrap a 1/2 doz or so wraps of fine lead wire around the hook shank & then slide it up under the bead . With a few wraps of thread & some crazy glue it's secure & I don't have to wrap a lot of thread wraps down to the hook when I finish the fly.

Re: Beadhead build-up...

My final wraps when finishing off a beadhead pattern disappear into the dubbing wrap I put on. On some of my caddis I use a bright colored thread that looks like a peaking caddis when I finish the fly off.

Re: Beadhead build-up...

Here's a picture of a beadhead Pheasant Tail I tied a few days ago...

I'm not sure if you can see it or not, but there's a wee bit of a thread segment directly behind the bead. This one is tied on a size 12 hook with 6/0 thread...

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi sesro1978,

If we are talking about flies that catch fish I see nothing wrong with the way you have tied it. Look at this picture from Kaufmann's and you see there is a distinct thread behind the bead. If your flies look like this I would not bother with trying to improve your tye.

Hi-

Yea, they look very similar to the images you posted. Thanks all; I just wanted to make sure a fish wouldn't look at my fly and think "Oh, too much thread, think I'll pass..."

I think the "sparser" flies (body wise) such as the Pheasant Tail tend to show the thread more as there isn't a dubbing thorax present to help hide it...

Thanks all!

Re: Beadhead build-up...

Hi Sesro,
I agree with Frank and think your fly looks fine.

As dan mentioned, a little dubbing will cover the thread if you decide you want it covered, or where you have Peacock Herl, why not lash in a single herl and wrap it a few times to conceal the thread wraps and then tie it off.
