Anyone else tie long streamers, and if so what techniques do you use? Do you use wire if you are going to create a large gap between the first hook and the last hook? Or do you just use a long piece of mono/backing/or spiderwire to connect the 2 hooks together?

I tie a a piece of stiff wire, or in this case the shank of a long 2/0 streamer hook and tied it on the back of a salmon hook to give me more room to tie and give the fly more substance. I also have found that the streamers dont fish as well, at least how i fish them, if i create a large articulation section, and this method allows me to reduce the articulation section while getting a fly that measures 6-7".





I use 30 pound spiderwire to double up to attach the 2 hooks


I also have this much weight wrapped around the rear hook as well.

Very nice tutorial and good looking fly.
I use a double hook system that I learned from Steelheaders.
I tie a scud hook on a piece of mono, then thread it through a Zonker strip, which is then tied on a streamer hook:

That would be good for the fly tieing faq forum!

Or do you have a link to another site that shows how to do that? Just trying to find some new ways to tie the hooks together to maybe get some different action out of the streamers.

Nice tye. Do you use any super glue or epoxy to fasten that rear hook?

You did a good job with the tutorial and I would like to post it in the FAQ but your pictures are too large. Take a look at the Thunder Creek post by Jocelin. That is the size of pictures we need. Your pictures exceed the maximum size limit.

I have tied up lots of articulated flies using a short piece of
20 or 30 lb maxima, looped thru the hookeye of the trailing
hook then tied down on the shank of the primary hook. I will
typically tie the maxima down well & add some Zap-a-Gap.

One thing I have found out this year about my long (6x or more)
streamers is that a longer hook gives the fish much better leverage
to spit the hook. I hooked several BIG salmon this past fall & each
hit a long streamer (sculpin pattern) & each ended up spitting the
hook. (they were hooked good too) Not sure if an articulated fly
may have helped ?

I have begun to tie up some tube flies that are armed with a much
smaller hook, even a double, or tribel hook can be used. Several
articles in flyfishing magazines are praising these flies. The longest
I've tied so far is about 4" & I may try longer ones.

I have read that same thing elsewhere, i actually dont use long streamer hooks, i am at work, and i dont have the specific hook name, but it is a salmon hook, i dont know if its harder for the fish to spit those or not?

Yeah i will resize my pictures tomorow. I was going to do it tonight in addition to taking some more pictures, but i didnt get around to tying tonight.

That is a good lookin streamer.
Change up the colors a bit and that would terrorize the Wipers' @ Willard Bay.

Nice fly, I tied my first long double hook streamers last week I put the front hook itno the back eye. My hook eye was a little larger than hook and I weighted back hook not front. In the water the back would move up and down as I put tension on it. The cool part is I was standing under a wooden bridge on on of the crossmembers so The water was 4-5ft deep and as I am seeing what the fly moved like in water a nice rainbow came up from bottom and just nailed it. I am going to make some tonight useing MTskibum tech. I am heading out in morning to see if we can top last weeks fish. I used the biggest flies and sinking line last week for first time and the fish were biggest I have landed. So hope this extra long one will get that extra big fish. Thanks for the pattern
