Free fly tying videos website!

Just a quick shameless plug for a new website and myself. There is a new site that has been up for a few weeks now and it is called The Weekly Fly The site is providing free fly tying videos of some famous and not so famous tiers whipping up some of their favorite patterns. The site will provide a new tier and new pattern each week for your fly tying enjoyment and knowledge. This week I happen to be the featured tier and I present you with a easy dry fly that requires very cheap materials and can be tied by the novice. Have fun with the site and I wish you all the best of fishing in the coming months.

Biggie

Nice job on the website! Great little video and as a beginner tier, I think you did a great job explaining the steps to tying a fly like that. Thanks for the help.

Re: Free fly tying videos website!

Hi Josh, Nice video and I like the pattern. I tie a similar one with a cdc wing instead of the yarn. Just curious about one thing. What's the purpose of wrapping the wing around and under the hook? Is it to give the fly a fatter thorax? Or does it make the wing stand up straighter a bit easier? I use poly yarn on my parachutes but haven't used that method of tying in the wing. I'll have to give it a try.

Dshort,
There are several reasons for attaching and tying in the yarn in the method I use. For the particular pattern that I tied on the Video it allows for the yarn to fan out a full 180 degrees around the hook. When the yarn is a complete half circle around the top half of the hook the fly will ride correctly on the water. I have taken a short cut and just tied in a chunk of yarn directly on top of the hook and it is hard to get this full wing and the fly tends to ride on it's side.

I also use the same method for tying my parachutes. On parachutes it is easier to get the wing to stand straight up and you don't have to make as many thread wraps in front and behind the material to accomplish the task. It also helps keep the bulk down a bit since you don't have to trim off the material and bind the left over material down with your thread. It is really a very clean way of doing a parachute and the bulk is actually half what you would need to tie on if you attached the poly yarn to the top of the hook shank, because you are folding the material around the hook shank. Give it a try, I really find it easier to get a clean slim fly using this method. Good luck and enjoy the other great tiers that they will be featuring in the future.

Biggie.

Makes sense. I'll give it a try. Thanks for the explanation.
