Re: What weight dumbell eyes?
If you're casting with a 5 weight, I wouldn't suggest weighting flies with anything larger than the "Medium (1/30 oz)" or maybe, the "large (1/20 oz)" sized lead eyes. Remember that throwing heavy flies on light rods drastically increases your chances of getting nailed in the back of the head with the fly.

Re: What weight dumbell eyes?
I recommend the 1/8" size HOURGLASS BRASS eyes instead of lead dumbells- they're much tougher, will straighten up almost automatically when tied in, and are non-toxic. (they're also a touch lighter than lead, so you'll be able to get a bigger eye on there and it will cast better on a 5wt.)

Re: What weight dumbell eyes?
Personally..I think a trout has more to worry about than the toxic nature of dumbells eyes. That hook thing piercing their flesh is most likely higher up their "concern" scale.
I have no qualms about staying leaded........look what happened to gas after the messed with it. Need octane booster just to get a V8 to run right. |
