seen lots of people post on using deceivers and clousers. was wondering if anybody could give me a pattern for the deceiver. the clouser would also work. wanting to use for pike and bass.

Just so you know, I rarely call fly tying material by the correct name. I have no clue what so ever as to the names of different insects and I call my flies whatever I feel like at the time..

In other words, a picture is worth 1000 words..

Deceivers may be good and I may be stupid, but for my money I'm all about synthetics. I know that I can not discredit the effectiveness of these time honored patterns for their fish catching ability. Deceivers and Deep minnows were created by two of the most knowledgable men to every pick up a rod. The Master Lefty and The Smallie King Bob. I will never touch the knowledge that these two have for the sport of flyfishing or the art of tying. So, that being said, I will say that I do not fish deceivers and I rarely fish a clouser (ignorance of youth, 26 I am). I'm huge into the synthetic patterns of various tyers out there now. Here's one of my own Big Eye tinker Mackeral patterns, tied using EP fibers on a 3/0 daiichi #2546 hook. These play double duty for stripers/blues/albies/etc. To the fresh water side for Pike/Musky/Bass/Hybrids, etc. Extremely Lightweight, more durable than a steel leader and they produce great action for being synthetic. The half and half is a great pattern that is a combo of the Deciever and the Clouser Minnow. its basically a clouser with the deciever tail on it. works best on size 2 and bigger. I often cheat when tying them and make the tail out of marabou, bucktail, or a synthetic since that's easier than matching up 6-10 saddle hackles. Craft fur works well on smaller ones, and pola-fibre or some of the EP stuff works great on bigger ones.

One other clouser tip- don't use lead eyes. Lead is quite heavy, but its also fairly weak. It's very easy to smack the fly on a rock/dock/etc and knock the eyes off totally. I like the hourglass brass eyes that are tougher and I think easier to tie in as well.
