Peter Wuijster is on a distinguished road
Hello everyone

My name is Peter and i'm new on this forum. First i will introduce myselfe, and then i've also a question. I'm 42 years old (!) and flyfishing for over 25 years now. I live in the Netherlands in Europe, but i fish all over the world. Freshwater aswell as saltwater. I ty my one flies. It's my life.
Now my question: Can anyone tell me how to prepare fungus to useable amadou? If anyone knows a site where i can find anything about it, it's also welcome. Hope to hear from you.
Thank you in advance, Peter.

Re: Hello everyone

Hello Peter- Welcome to the board!

The stuff you're looking for is called Hoof Fungus here in the US, scientific name Fomes fomentarius. Here's a link so that you'll know it when you come across it:

Fomes fomentarius, the tinder polypore (amadou, styptic, touchwood, punk, hoof fungus, amadou Amadouvier), Tom Volk's Fungus of the Month for December 2001,

And here's how you prepare it:

Wildwood Survival - Fire - Tinder Fungus - Amadou

Some shops may sell it, Orvis used to and may still, and perhaps some shops in the UK. Not many people use it here now though.

To dry a fly, just put it between two layers like a fly sandwich and squeeze.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Peter, this part of the forum doesn't get many visitors, you may want to post in the "General Discussion" Forum next time.
