10 intro from kelkay

Just thought I would introduce myself. I am from the Tyler-Longview area. I mainly fish at lakes. I fish for just about anything but catfish. I am 48 years old. I just started back fly fishing this winter. I tried it before about three years ago and gave up because I couldn't cast right, and didn't know anyone who fly fished. This winter I went for a couple of lessons, at least I can cast a little, not great mind you... What made me want to pick up fly fishing was fishing for trout over the winter that were stocked. I decided it was so much fun, I wanted to pick up my fly rod again. I had a five wt rod and reel beginner combo. Now I have an 8wt combo, still beginner. I started making some of my own flies in mid Jan or so. Looking forward to learning, and making new friends on here.

Hi kelkay,

Welcome to the forum. Lessons really make a difference. You have came to a good forum to make friends and learn. Take some time and look at the FAQ section. You can learn a lot from the fly tying tutorials there. Don't be bashful about asking questions.

Re: intro from kelkay

Welcome kelkay,
Glad you took up the long rod again, be patient and it will happen for you.
As Frank mentioned, don't be shy, ask questions and someone is bound to help. Enjoy.

I tie flies like woolly buggers, crappie candy, bream killers, lithuanian bats, bendbacks, deceivers...that kind of thing.

Re: intro from kelkay

I guess I should mention I tie many other kinds of flies. I have been tying since mid Jan. I have tied simple things like glow bug, san juan worms, pink and green weenies...to jigs. I do not have a decent vise, but I get by on one of those cheap vises you get with a fly tying kit.

Re: intro from kelkay

fyshstykr...I think I am glad I took it up again too. I certainly am better than last time I tried it with no help at all. Now I can tie some flies it makes it all even that much better. I see you are from a few states? Id, Wy, and Mt would be heaven for me. I wanted to move there many years ago. But I ended up getting married, having kids, and staying in my home state of Texas. I have been single now for almost 15 years...and still live in Tx, for the kids. My parents are not in good health either, so I guess I will be staying on for the long haul. Still, I want to visit the NW states when my kids are grown, which is not far off. I plan to make a few fishing trips that way. :-) I am really hating the traffic and congestion of the NE side of Tx. Luckily there are some decent lakes here, especially if you are lucky enough to have a boat. Sadly I do not have a boat. But I hope to one day!
