Re: Age/Experience

I've fished all types of ways, including fly fished for over 1/2 a century (dang time flies)
At or around the spring of 1982 I had to make decision:
- Become a lounge lizard and hang around in hotel bars after work when on the road
- Sit in a cubical all day playing office politics while staring at screen savers of fly fishing while making a few more beanski's a week or
- Take the outside sales job that allowed me a bit a freedom to do what I like doing most, chasing fish with a fly rod.
I chose the latter with zero regrets! I'm just plain lucky and blessed to have had the number of fishing days I averaged per year over that time!

Re: Age/Experience

Here is one presented to me. What is your take:
"If someone fishes 5 out of 7 days a week for ONE year, does he end up with the same knowledge as someone who fishes maybe 4 -6 days A MONTH for 20 years?"

Re: Age/Experience

Joni,

Everyones learning curve is different, and if by experience we mean what's been learned over a period of time, then that's something that needs to be taken in account.

A person who fishes 5 days a week for a year for twenty years may have less experience than someone who fishes two days a month for ten years. I think it's all up to the individual, not the calender.

I've been fly fishing somewhere around 35 to 40 years. Does that give me more experience than someone who's been fly fishing 20 to 25 years, or less experience than someone who's been fly fishing 50 years? Maybe yes and maybe no.

OK...

Started fishing when I was 4, full time home was on the Raquette River (mostly warm water), summer home was on Lake Ozonia (cold and warm water species) in the northern Adirondacks until I was 18. I fished 100+ days a year on average for those 14 years. The next 20 years was spotted with mixed activity all around north America, and got me into saltwater, ranging anywhere from 20 to 60 days a year in that period. Started fly fishing 12 years ago (haven't touched spin tackle since) while taking an early, temporary retirement, fly fished about 300 days in that first 18 months, mostly with a crusty old timer who got me started and has become one of my best friends. Since then I have fished as few as 40 days in a year, and as many as 120... and have been active in sales, marketing and product development for a fly shop/guide service for the last 4 years.

In '06 I made a commitment to do 'something more' with one of my two passions, fly fishing and motorcycling. I was in the process of earning my NH Guides License when the State DMV offered to sponsor my training to become a certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation RiderCoach..... so, I decided to save some lives and avoid all the nightmares I was always hearing about from my guide buddies

How's that Jack?

Gee... I wonder who that was...

I believe you're familiar with my take on that...

Re: Age/Experience

I'm 24 and I've been fishing sice I can remember, but fly fishing for about two years. I'm still pretty green though, only getting about 70 days a year on in my waders.
