Re: The End of An Era
This brings to mind of a hunting trip to Colorado in the late 60's. My wife and I were supposed to meet my high school buddy in Colorado for a week of deer hunting. I had only been married a short time and my wife had never camped. My friend didn't show up and he had the tent. I made a lean-too with a tarp an we had two good sleeping bags. I approached a rancher about hunting on his property. He said I was welcome to hunt across the road and there was a cabin we could use. We checked out the cabin and it was really run down and dirty so we didn't use it. Sitting against the wall was this beautiful old Monarch. I asked the rancher about the stove and he said we could have it if we wanted it. He would even help us load it. I really wanted that old stove but my job required me to travel all the time and we didn't have any place to put it. So we left with out the stove.

The memories that story brought back -- the old wood stove in my grandparents' farmhouse and the wonderful smells coming out of the kitchen -- especially to a five or six year old eager to hit the river with his Granddad
