Re: Old tackle......
Hi fyshstykr,
I don't collect old equipment but I have rods and reels that I bought many years ago. I have one bamboo rod that my grandfather had when I was just a young boy. I don't think I have ever sold any fishing equipment that I have bought in my lifetime. I have never thought about buying some equipment just be cause it is an antique. Frank

Re: Old tackle......
Frank, I'd love to see photos of your grandfather's bamboo rod.
I have an old bamboo rod, but do not know any history on it. It's in a wooden box, very fragile. I'd like to learn how to make a bamboo rod. My wife usually finds a place to display the things I bring home. She likes it as much as I do. My favorites are probably an old leather fly wallet with flannel to hold the flies and an old handmade wooden fly box filled with old snelled leader flies. I'd love to hear the stories that go with all those flies.

Re: Old tackle......
Frank, knowing how long and how involved you've been in flyfishing in many venues, I bet your wife would love you to have a "garage sale". (BTW, if you have one, let me know, because I can only imaging the jewels would be on sale!).

Re: Old tackle......
Hi To All,
fyshstykr, it would be fun to make a bamboo rod. To do it right it takes a bit of equipment and a good deal of knowledge. You might wan't to consider buying a Bamboo Kit from one of the Bamboo rod makers. They come with the strips glued and you can get them with or with-out ferules. You add the hardware and do the wraps your self. It is the cheapest way I know of getting into a decent Bamboo fly rod. Fly2fish, I don't have a bunch of stuff and it will all be given away to a youth or my son. My son doesn't fly fish but I keep hoping he will see the light. Frank

Re: Old tackle......
Frank,
I've seen in different mags an add for learning to build your own bamboo, I guess you actually go and work with the guy for a week or so, he has all the planes. (I think that's what their called.) And if you decide to continue building more, he will fabricate them and ship them to you. Sounds like a lotta fun....

Re: Old tackle......
I talked to a co-worker of my wife, she told me they have 5 old tackle boxes stuffed full of tackle from her Dad, they didn't want to just donate them to the local thrift store when he passed away so they stuck them away in the garage.
Anyway she invited me to come over and take a look at them, if I can use em then I am welcome to take em. I had better take some cash with me and make it fair if there are some good things.

Re: Old tackle......
Hi Fysh,
I think there are a few of the bamboo people holding schools that you can attend and use their equipment. It is probably the best way to learn bamboo making. Like most things, getting instructions from someone that knows what there are doing is a major short cut. Frank
