Re: The "Shout out" thread....

Hello Larry,
How's things? goin well I hope. My workweek is proceeding well and ahead of schedule.
We were thinking of just resting this weekend, maybe hitting a close lake on Friday morning, but now that I got some time on the water in(Fever!!), I'm thinking of possibly hitting the S/F again Friday, and then resting on Sat/Sun.

I did a real bad thing last Sat morning@ the local shop, I've been eye balling a new Orvis Z.G. Helios 9' 4wt, well I decided to cast it and that was all it took, I cast the whole flyline easily(parking lot flyline, horribly dirty too!!).

I ended up laying one away, hopefully I can go pick it up in a couple weeks, now I will have to buy a new reel also. This is the first rod I have bought off the rack in over 20 yrs, what a "Sweet Freakin Rod!!!

We need to get some plans made for a Fall trip, whether it be the S/F or the Green below/above Fontonelle.....

Fysh

If you want to fish Friday how about the Teton? If it is still blown out could always hit the SF. Have not heard back from my bud in Alpine and I definitely want to fish while I have no bookings. All the Green did was wet my appetite!!

Fysh

Wow! You've got that new rod bug BAD! I've heard that the Helios is a superb rod, I sure would like to have one, but the wife would kill me after I just boat the new boat.

I finally got the front yard mowed last night plus some cleanup of tumble weeds that had blown in. I have the truck full so need to make a trip to the dump. I'm working tonight as we have a Cisco Engineer here today that will be helping me with some configuration changes to our CallManager.
Its starting to get real busy at work as the summer projects are finally getting started.

Fished the North Platte (Grey Reef) last Sunday. Learned alot about that river, the flow is still down to 500cfs. Before we put in I went over to the North Platte Fly Shop to see if they had oar rites, but didn't get to talk to them, they had a party of six that they were trying to get on the water. I did over hear him say that he wasn't using the rock worm, but instead was using midges and that they would not be using a shuttle, they would take out at the same spot they launched at. I thought that was weird, but didn't understand the reasoning at the time. I then went over to the dam and checked in with the fly shop there to signup for the shuttle. I heard the guy there tell the shuttle gal that I was the first (only) request for a shuttle, but I thought its Fathers Day. He also recommended midges so I bought a few.
When I got to the water I saw that it was really discolored, but launched anyway. As soon as we started fishing I had three really strong hits. On the first one I lost both the point and dropper fly, I thought maybe my lead knot was bad, tied another two midges on and had another big hit, this time I lost the dropper. Tied another dropper on and again I lost the dropper on the next hit, but the lead fly hook was bent out badly. I tried to straighten the hook and of course it broke. That was the last of the action for the day. Now thinking back I think I was just using too small of a leader/tippet combo, 5X, probably should have been using a 3X with maybe a 4X tippet. The other thing I learned is that with the low water levels and high outside temperatures, the fish seem to be all concentrated up near the dam, say in the first mile, so it is a waste of time floating all the way to Lusby (approx. 7 miles). The lower portion also is loaded with moss, which required cleaning the flies after every cast. Not sure yet if I will fish the Grey Reef this weekend or try one of the Blue Ribbon lakes near Walden, but the wx forecast looks like it will be a great weekend for fishing.

Yes, I sure would like to go fishing with you and Davo again, maybe S/F in the fall.

Larry

Re: The "Shout out" thread....

Just FYI....I talked to the guys at Teton River (Valley) Lodge and they say that the Teton won't be fishable this year till after the 4th. I was anxious to fish it so I called and talked to them for a few minutes.

Also FYI...a few days ago I hiked into the canyon between upper and lower Mesa Falls and caught a couple rainbows. 12-14"inches. It was beautiful and I had a good time. Also, in 30 minutes I am leaving to go fish Birch Creek for an hour or two and them float Warm River to Ashton. They say the Golden Stones should be going on the lower river so I am hoping to catch that.

I will return and report.

Have a good day.....I know I will!

BTW....Fysh, a Helios!!! Congrats!

Dorian

Thanks for the update on the Teton, I was hoping it would be cleared up by now. Warm weather is melting the snow up high and has all our water blown out, the Snake is raging good up here.

Thanks for the report on the Falls. Looking forward to hearing about the Warm river.

Did you make it up to the SF? Or just relax at home? No fishin for me this weekend, everyone had things to do. The Green and SF are all that is fishing and just for floating mostly. I got caught up on all the yard work I put of during our wet cold spring. I also ordered my restoration kit for the boat. Got a lot of polishing to do next week.

Larry

You get out this weekend? The water is clear down your way right?

Hi Larry, hope you have a great time this weekend.

I took the wife to the local fly shop today and had her cast the 'Helios', she also got a new hat and a $10.00 Orvis gift card, so we used hers and mine to pick up some new Orvis leaders and tippet material, of course this all went immediately into her bag. lol

Hi Dave,

No, we decided to stick around close to home this weekend after realizing what phase the moon was in, I hate fishing the days after a full moon.

Sorry I didn't get back to you any sooner about Friday, I apologize.

On a good note, we got a few more things wrapped up around here, like getting beds planted, and the garden trenched(I can taste them maters already).
Had a fire tonight and roasted some weenies for dinner, with smores for dessert, and enjoying a little 'Beam on the rocks' at the moment, gonna watch a movie in a few, and stay up late.
