Re: The "Shout out" thread....

Anybody going fishing this weekend?

I've lined up a guide for Friday to take me down the North Platte to float the section from Treasure Island to Saratoga, WY. I figure once I've seen the river I will be able to tell if my rowing abilities can handle that stretch of river. During the peak of the run off it was at 2,600 cfs up at Northgate, CO., then the Encampment was dumping about 2,000 cfs but both rivers are about half that now so it should be a good float. The local fly shop told me they have lost 3 boats on the upper section already this year, but the lower section is much smoother.

Hows the refurb job coming on the boat? You about ready for guiding season?

It seems UPS is having problems finding Wyoming. Hopefully they can find it Monday and I can get started on my seasonal clean up. I'll take some before and after photos as I'm using a new product this year.

Fysh

How was the holiday weekend fishing on the SF. Hope it was great and you got lots of pics. Really enjoyed dinner and meeting the Mrs. Hope we all get the opportunity to fish together soon. I'll let you know how the Teton is coming this week!!

Re: The "Shout out" thread....

Larry,
How was your trip? hope all is going well with you.

Dave,
We also enjoyed your company Friday evening, hope your doing well also.

We fished the section from Byington to Lorenzo on Saturday, the fishing was ok, but not great.
A few Salmon flies for the first couple miles, but it looks like the main hatch was upstream from Byington, and the fish were stuffed from chowing the day before.
A few Goldens were starting to show, as well as a few P.M.D's, and we got into a fun little Green Drake hatch just after lunch, the wife caught a beautiful 19" Brown, and I had a couple nice fish take me to the heavy current and release themselves. LOL.

We fished the Box Canyon(Henry's Fork) on Saturday morning until Early afternoon, caught a few smaller fish on Golden P.M.X's, but we were overrun with recreational floaters, we expected this and didn't take the fishing too serious. Also ran into a friend of ours that guides out of West Yellowstone, he asked us to come float with him on the Madison that afternoon, we graciousely accepted the invite.
We floated from Lyons to Palisades, water was still a bit high but clear, Pam boated a couple fish on Black Rubber Legs, and I fished Various Streamers, and landed a couple nice Browns.
When we got off the water it was still light, so we stopped at Reynolds Bridge and fished for about an hour, I caught a nice Bow, and missed several others on Streamers.
Pam caught a Bat, Darn thing snagged her fly right off the surface.

I decided to drag a Streamer through the water she had been fishing, took 2 steps toward the water and my feet went out from under me and I went down in the muck mud, we all got a good laugh from that.

Ended up fishing the 'Ranch' late this morning, had some Green Drakes coming off along with some P.M.D's, the fish handed me my butt.

Overall a great weekend.

Re: The "Shout out" thread....

I was able to get away for 1 day over the long weekend to Southern Utah and had a blast. Caught some really nice Colorado Cutts from a small res in the Boulder Mountains and a hybrid from a small stream. I'm having a hard time posting the pics so look under "Southern Utah Trout" in the gallery and you will see the fish. Enjoy!

[quote=fyshstykr;32112]Larry,

Sounds like you had an excellent weekend!

My trip was excellent! Went with Stoney Creek Outfitters out of Saratoga on Friday and we floated the North Platte from Treasure Island to Saratoga. Nice stretch of river, but I'm sure glad I went there with a guide first. The river is not too difficult (for my experience level) but there are a couple of places you have to know in advance (like which channel to take) and the take out is blind so you need to know that you have to be on the left side as you enter town or you will miss the take out. The guide did an excellent job of showing me where the runs were, the river is still high from run off so you need experience to know where the runs are. We caught 25-30 fish, a mix of rainbows and browns in the 14-18" range. I took a couple of pics and will post them later this evening. We started with large streamers but I didn't catch anything in the first hour so we switched to a two nymph setup using hare's ears, san juan worms and pheasant tails.

The interesting part was in talking with the guide he told me they were currently doing most of their trips on the upper section of the river, so now I want to take a trip on that section to see what it looks like, but will definately use a guide. The shop told me that three boats have already overturned this year on the upper section of the North Platte with one getting stuck in a log jam and doing $4,000 worth of damage! Ouch!

Saturday I took the boat over to Lake Owen and got skunked. My fishing partner caught 4 small 10" rainbows, but at least I got in some good rowing practice. The wind was pretty strong so it made for some interesting casting to say the least, but mostly we rowed up wind and let the boat drift acoss the lake and then repeat. Anyway, nice day to be outdoors on the water!
Had a Game and Fish officer check our licenses and lif jacket while we were fishing. I found out that my throwable device is no longer legal. I guess they changed the rules so that now you need one of those square seat cushions as a throwable device. Had a flat tire on the trailer just as we got back into town. Thank god for spares!

Davo

Sorry to hear about the postal service fiasco with your refurb kit. Maybe it will get delivered this week!

Here are some pics of our holiday trip.

A nice brown on the Madison and a friend of ours in the pic with me.

And a pic from the box canyon on Henry's, I forgot how pretty that place is....

Nice scenery and beautiful fish. Having seen Mrs. Fysh' catch and fished with you I'm beginning she is real fisherperson in the family. LOL. Yes UPS finally found Wyoming and delivered my boat cleaning kit. That is my project for Thursday in hopes that I can get some fishing in on Friday.

Re: The "Shout out" thread....

Hey to all,

Dang, you guys are killing me. Its bad enough that you live in that great country but do you have to keep showing those pictures?

Fysh, it sounds and looks like you had a great weekend. When do you find time to post?

Larry, you are smart to float before you go on your own. You will be a pro in no time.

Davo, don't they have soap and water in your neck of the woods? What kind of kit do you need to clean your boat?

The pictures bring back memories of fishing Alaska. We had a beautiful little river full of Grayling about two hours from home. My wife would have the camper packed and everything ready to go Friday afternoon when I got off work. I would hook up the boat and we wouldn't be back until Sunday night. If I had a problem at work and didn't get home till late, no problem. We had daylight 24 hours a day and even if we got there at midnight we had enough light to set up camp and launch the boat with out a lantern or flashlight. We would have that whole river to our selves most of the time.

Frank
