Re: The "Shout out" thread....

Did you make it out for some fishing this past weekend? If so how about a report? I did a road trip up to Cody, WY. Didn't get in any fishing but I got the low down on a couple of local lakes that looks to be very promising. I think they were called East Newton and ??? near the Cody Gun Club. Watched a couple of rainbows (16-18") sipping PMD's off the surface. Very exciting. Larry |

Re: The "Shout out" thread....
Hello Larry.
I like the Cody area, never fished around there, but hear it's a good area. We did make it out on Saturday, and hit the S/F again. The water was up a bit, and the lower section was pretty heavy with boils and swift backcurrents in places. It was also a full moon and the fishing was off. Planning on hitting a local lake next weekend.

Sorry to hear the water is stll high. Around here the water is starting to come down pretty fast. The North Platte is looking really good, I'm hoping to get out again on Saturday. I stopped in a couple of the fly shops in Cody as I was curious as to the status of Monster Lake and if any of the fly shops had leased fishing rights. I had previously noted that the Monster Lake web site is no longer and I had seen an old link that was offering the ranch up for sale. What I found out was that someone bought the property with the intention of developing luxury homes, but so far nothing has happened. He did tell me that no of the fly shops has fishing rights.....too bad! Larry |

Re: The "Shout out" thread....
Hello Larry,
I don't think it will be high for much longer, even though it looks to me like we will have slightly higher flows than the past few years. Must admit some of the boils right now kinda spook me at times, especially since rowing this section is still fairly new to me, and this section seems to have more snags every time we go there. On another note, This year there have been 2 drownings on the river where the people were recovered, and 2 more instances where a kayak was found with no person, and another where a kick boat was found on the river with the persons I.D. and medication, and no one knows who it is or has reported a missing person. The Idaho State Police were doing a search last friday. I've seen some of the fish that are in Monster Lake, that's too bad that there may be no more access. Looks like we are going fishing very early on Friday morning @ a little Idaho lake, gonna chuck streamers before sun rise, and follow the shore line with dry flies after. Come home around noon, and take a nap. lol Good Luck this weekend, thank goodness the full moon is over.

That sounds kind of scary! You be careful out there on the river and good luck with the fishing. Is Davo guiding yet, haven't seen him posting lately, figured he must be busy fishing? I was fishing on Lake Owen the other day and Fish and Game came over and inspected the boat. He told me my throw device is no longer legal, so I had the wife p/u one of those square seat pad devices, I guess Wyoming has changed the ruling. Anyway, he was nice about it and didn't give me a ticket. I'm thinking about going up after work if the wx will cooperate. We got hit pretty hard by thunderstorms yesterday afternoon and it looks to be a repeat today. I've been keeping an eye on the Colorado river flows below Glenwood Springs, I've been eyeing a float from Silt to Rifle. That section looks to be fairly tame especially once the river goes down. My son's brother-in-law floated that section last summer and did pretty well. The put in late in the afternoon and pulled out just as the daylight was ending. Larry |

Re: The "Shout out" thread....
Spotted this article on-line on the Fly Fisherman web site:
Utah Supreme Court Rules in Anglers' Favor All streams are open to anglers Fishing enthusiasts are giddy over a Utah Supreme Court decision that allows the public onto streams that flow through private property. "This is something that will just make the angling community do back flips," said Ed Kent, chair of the Utah Anglers Coalition, said of Friday's ruling. "This is going to open corridors of extremely productive waters to anglers that have only been accessible to individuals who gained permission from friends to fish private land," Kent said. The court decision stems from an incident eight years ago, when a rafter was cited for trespassing after walking in the bed of the Weber River owned by a handful of Morgan County ranchers. But Friday's unanimous ruling allows Utahns to walk on the beds of all streams and rivers, no matter who owns the land beneath them. Even streams as small as a trickle will be fair game for people who want to fish or wade. For more details see sltrib.com/ci_9923629 |

I have been guiding. Also quite busy with my Security job as well. Hoping to get out and do some fishing with my days off this week. The river has finally cleared up enough here to fish. Water is not yet ideal but it is close. Running about 2000 cfs higher than normal for this time of year, visibilty is 5-6 ft and getting better everyday. Streamers and nymphs are still your best bets, but the hopper are getting active and the fish are starting to look up. I expect the dry fly action to really turn on in the next week. There have been a few changes in the river but nothing too major. Three islands are gone and the river has widened in a couple of areas. Once the water level drops some more there should be some fantastic new riffles that we can get out and work. I've heard no reports of or found any log jams or other hazards.

I thought you might be getting busy with guiding season finally here. Its kind of funny when you say "once the river drops another 2000", heck that is a river around here! The wife and I fished North Delaney lake Saturday. I wanted to go over to the North Platte but couldn't find anyone wanting to go fishing. That section of river has no public access so I was looking for someone willing to share rowing duties. The river has dropped quite a bit so it should be a pretty easy row. We were on it a couple weeks ago with the flow much higher and it still looked pretty easy. Anyway, I stopped in Walden to get a CO fishing license and buy some flies. We did pretty good, I caught two really nice size fish (approx. 18-20") both were very fat (one brown and one rainbow), then lost another two. All in all a very good trip. Lots of bugs on the surface (callibaetis and damsels) but no real surface action from the fish, finally got run off the lake with the late afternoon thunderstorm. Larry |

Re: The "Shout out" thread....
I bought a new Lamson Lightspeed 2 fly reel off ebay loaded with line and backing. What a fantastic reel! Can't wait to try it out on the water.
I'm headed down to Glenwood Springs this weekend with the drift boat. Saturday I'm helping the in-laws do some spring cleaning and then on Sunday we are going to float the Colorado river below Glenwood. Not sure if we will do New Castle to Rifle or Silt to New Castle. The weather looks like it will be good so I'm looking forward to getting on the river. Larry |
