Re: Waterproof Pentax Optio W60
Looks great. I'm curious: is this Pentax suitable for taking pictures that will fulfill magazine guidlines? Does it take raw files?

Re: Waterproof Pentax Optio W60
I purchased a Optio W10 about 3 years ago...... on sale for $345 with a memory card.
Simply wonderful camera. I've taken thousands of pix and lots of underwater too. If my camera ever breaks, I would get a W60! |

The new Pentax W60 coming on sale July 1 poses a tough decision for me. I'd like a for-fishing-only waterproof camera for a one-week fly-fishing trip I leave for on July 13 and had pretty much made up my mind to get an Olympus Stylus 850SW. While the size and weight of the new W60 Pentax are only slightly larger than the Olympus, the Pentax has a more useful optical zoom range (it also has marginally more megapixels, but perhaps not enough to matter - 10.1 v 7.9). The problem with the Pentax is that it probably won't have been on the market long enough by when I leave to have a price discounted from MSRP, which leaves it more than $100 higher than the Olympus 850 can be bought for.

Re: Waterproof Pentax Optio W60
Not all magazines are print only, and if it's a great shot I'm sure they will work with it at full rezolution even if it has some compression.....It's still better quality than film, especally when you consider print mags are only publishing seperations....

Re: Waterproof Pentax Optio W60
These cameras are great! I take mine fishing, whitewater rafting and anywhere else that water could be an issue. They are small enough to put in your vest so it is always on hand. It takes amazing pictures. My local fly shop actually had one in stock. They also sell them online at
You can't go wrong with this little baby. |

Consumer digital is still not better than film (as you stated). Most experts will tell you that a minimum of 16-17 megapixels are required to equal typical over-the-counter 200 speed film. Many believe the value is much higher for professional film with smaller grain sizes. The cheaper the diigtal camera, the cheaper the lens, the smaller the sensor size, and the more noise you will get. This means that the same size photo from a point-and-shoot will have a lesser quality than one from a high end DLSLR. Since few point-and-shoot-cameras save photos in RAW format, you will not be able to use them (including the W60) for professional magazine photography. None of this really matters for typical non-professional photography because we view most photos on a 1.3 megapixel computer screen or print out 4 x 6 (or smaller) prints at a print resolution of 200 dots per inch (dpi) or maybe 300 dpi. This is just under 1 million dots for the 200dpi or about 2.1 million dots for the 300 dpi. Any decent digital camera currently made will work just fine for these resolution levels. |
