I think one of the main keys to nymphing is visualization. You've got to picture what the stream looks like underwater and how your fly, indicator, and/or shot are moving downstream. You've also got to be able to get your fly down to the bottom. I really like using the "bounce nymphing" method, as it doesn't hang up so much and if I have to break off a snag on the bottom i don't loose a fly.

From an article by Larry Tullis in Flyfisherman magazine:
Quote:
A bounce-nymphing rig consists of a strike indicator placed about three times the depth of the water from the fly. The terminal end is the difference. The weight is on the bottom end of the tippet, and one or two short droppers are located 10 to 12 inches up and 10 to 12 inches apart. The rig is cast or lobbed upstream. The weight quickly sinks to the bottom and begins bouncing on the gravel. The indicator bounces more slowly than the current, and any unnatural movement on the strike indicator (a break in the bouncing pattern) should be considered a hit. The bounce obviously doesn't work well in weedbeds or boulderfields, but is deadly in riffles because it keeps the flies in the strike zone much longer than standard indicator techniques.
It also helps to make the dropper that the shot is attached to a lighter tippet so you can break it off and keep the fly attached. I think the bounce rig is also a little easier to cast since the weight is out at the end of the leader instead of in the middle, like a typical nymphing rig with split shot added.

Re: Hellooooooooooooooooooo!

Hi FowlHabit,

I'm up in Santa Clarita less than a 1/2hr from Simi, I went fishing on Piru creek over the holiday weekend, water was nice, wind was heavy sometimes blow out. I only fished for a couple of hours, picked up just a couple of small guys almost embrassing small. Heck I had fun and I got out and fished. We have a great club out here "Santa Clarita Casting Club" it's new about a year old with about 40 members. If you like I can get you some info.
