Re: trout on Kauai
We vacationed in Kauai two weeks in 95 and again in 98. I was amazed at the outdoor offerings, including bowhunting and trout fishing. The trout fishing was considered to be better on the west side of the island. Two of the streams we visited were beautiful. Most of the trout fishermen I talked to used streamers or something similar to glowbugs. Didn't seem to be too much dry fly interest with the locals I talked to.

Re: trout on Kauai
Thanks Bruce,
Did you get to go fishing? I have read that there is no dry fly action on the island since there are no bugs that hatch in the streams, not like I am use to anyway. Thanks for the report. I hope to get on the streams there this summer. I am also looking into some yak fishing in some of the brackish waters emptying into the ocean. |

Re: trout on Kauai
I didn't fish for trout on any of the ialands. The first time we were on vacation for four weeks and the second time three weeks. There was just too much to pack and the fresh water fishing just didn't seem worth the effort. Last summer we vacationed in Alaska and that's a whole different story. If you go to Alaska, ya gotta fish!

Re: trout on Kauai
thanks and maybe one day I can get to Alaska. I have fishing Hawaii before and it is definitely worth it. I fished for and caught peacock bass on Oahu and Marlin on Kauai and it was over 300 lbs and 11 ft long.
I thought I would try a smaller stream this time and then some flats for their big bones ![]() |

Re: trout on Kauai
do you know how recent the article was, I ran across one that was a few years old, and it was about a place you HAD to hike into and it was not a place I could get to in a short day trip. If you can run across it please post a link, I would like to have as much info as possible before I go.

sorry, i do not know how old the article was. unlike newspapers, web-published articles often do not have datelines which drives me crazy (i work for a newspaper ;-). i can say i ran across it over the past year, but do not know if it had been recently published. i originally thought it might have been flyfishingconnection, but right now, this second, the site name field and stream pops into my mind. i save so many websites, i'm surprised i still cannot find it. i DO recall the writer focused on the hike in, how difficult it had been. i'm not sure if it required an overnighter. there were trout to be found. i'll keep looking. again, i do not know which island it had been. eric fresno, ca. |
