I loose about five or six or on a full day float. Thats why I tie my own fly's.

Re: How Many Flies Do You Lose In A Outing?

Does this include dropping the fly box and losing half of them in the water and grass?

If it's a dry fly day, few.....If it's a bouncing slump busters off the bottom day, many.

Re: How Many Flies Do You Lose In A Outing?

How many tees do you break during a round of golf? Sometimes 10 sometimes none. Does it matter as long as your having fun? It is the price you pay for fishing. Learn to tie if losing them bothers you. One reason flyfishing attracted me was that flies were cheaper than spinners, spoons or lures and yet the fish I caught flyfishing were bigger.

Who counts? If your not loosing flies your not fishing in the right place. Fish hide where you loose flies!!

Re: How Many Flies Do You Lose In A Outing?

Not that it matters....just thought of it as a generic question. All things being relevant. Loss of flies is not a gauge of how much fun you are having. But the experiences themselves. I'ts enough to get out and be fishing.

Re: How Many Flies Do You Lose In A Outing?

A lot of my clients worry about loosing flies at the beginning of the day. I always tell them you have to risk flies to catch fish. I'd say I have more come apart than get lost though. Especially Para Hoppers, two to three fish and the hackle unravels.

Re: How Many Flies Do You Lose In A Outing?

On avg. when I fish my local stream (Boulder Creek) I won't lose any flies. However, I fish a dry droppper quite a bit so if I lose one, I usually lose both flies. The worst day I had was fishing the Roaring Fork when the flows were a little high last year. Fighting large rainbows on light tibbet in fast moving water was just not a winning battle. I lost more than I care to say (all by fish) even after attempting a "river runs through it" moment and running downstream after a fish trying not to fall in. It was a lot of fun regardless.
