Re: What knot do you tie your fly on with?

Hi to all,

Good point Joni. Any loop knot no matter if you are tyeing on a fly or making a loop to loop connection should be small loops. The no-slip mono knot can be tied pretty small and the perfection loop can be tied very small.

Re: What knot do you tie your fly on with?

I never heard of anyone doing this but stole it from a walleye rig that i make-- i have been putting my fly in the middle of tying a perfection loop---i can tie it in less than 30 sec at my desk (which translates into 3 minutes in a pitching boat and shaking hands while changing flies for a daisychaining pod of tarpon)

loop the first loop and pinch --put fly in and make the second loop and pinch and put the tag between the loops---pull the fly through the first loop and adjust the size

heres what it looks like:

Re: What knot do you tie your fly on with?

I use a clinch knot all the time. I have never lost a fly with this knot; not on fish, not on logs, not on rocks, not on tree branches. But, I'm always using flies that are in the 12-28 size range, so I can't comment on it's value with larger flies. I use hemostats to tie my clinch; very quick, very easy and, so far, no broken-off flies. I pull the knot tight very slowly (even when I'm looking at the rise the of a lifetime) and I'm careful to be sure that it's moist enough to avoid the potential friction-induced meltdown.

Re: What knot do you tie your fly on with?

Hi All:

I use a cinch and when I want a little more action on my wets and streamers I will use a ducan loop. I find both work well.

Re: What knot do you tie your fly on with?

I only use a Uni knot. I think it's much better than the improved clinch and so much faster to tie. I mean a Uni, not a Uni loop.

Even tying leader to tippet, I use a Uni to Uni. The triple surgeons has a big lump and doesn't have the knot strength the Uni does.

The Uni only takes a second to tie. I use a six loop Uni. Also the knot will slide down to the fly and only use a small amount of tippet.

Everyone uses the Uni knot in saltwater....... both spin and fly. I got used to it and use it exclusively with my freshwater 6X!

The improved Clinch is probably just as strong, it's just that I got so used to tying the Uni. I can tie it with my eyes closed!

It's hard to teach a old dog new tricks!

Re: What knot do you tie your fly on with?

Improved clinch!! First knot I ever learned. I can do it quick, which counts when changing flies for clients. Use surgeons knot for tying on tippet. Rebuilding a leader might get a blood knot or two before the surgeons.

I have been using improved cinch knot due to thats the knot I was told to use when we took some lessens ast year, but I am trying a lot of others now that I finally remembered that there's more then one way to skin a cat.

Re: What knot do you tie your fly on with?

Davy knot for me in fresh water, non slip mono in salt. Both are fast, have never let me down, and easy to tie with my stiff old fingers.
