Default Bead Fishing in Fly Fishing Only Water

I have read that in some “fly fishing only” areas in Alaska that fishing with beads not attached to the hook is not allowed. I wonder if attaching a bead to a streamer hook, near the eye, might be effective and similar to having a bead placed above the hook?

If you think I am crazy it's ok as lots of folks think the same.

Wouldn't that be an egg sucking leach? (They do seem to work quite well...)

I am thinking of a naked streamer hook with an egg bead attached near the eye of the hook.

I agree that egg sucking leaches work well, perhaps I am thinking of a naked egg sucking leach, ah a name that is unlikely to catch on.

Now I understand! I'm not sure the brown shirts would consider that as a fly. A fly needs to be constructed by common methods known as fly tying. A tube fly is only an attractor and not legal in ffo waters. I'm pretty sure your fly would be troublesome.

Stan

How would such a rig differ from attaching an egg bead to an egg hook?

I would love to stay away from both brown shirts and brown bears:-)

They usually will consider a bare bead as not fly tying. Almost all of the rivers allow the beads. You will save a lot of grief if you stick with conventional flies on the FFO rivers.

I have never been convinced that a bead mounted on the hook will out fish a well tied glo-bug. I've listened to guides on the upper Kenai that swear the trout will no longer hit a glo-bug and then catch some more up. I've always wondered if they weren't able to tie go-bugs well as they certainly require a technique, especially the small ones. For a real change-up, try a bead head prince. Nymphs may be the best kept secret. JMHO.

Try a nymph a streamer or an egg imitation. Used to be a guy on the Salmon who cleaned up on Salmon using nothing more than a clear bead and a bare hook, that's mouth snagging not fly fishing!

That looks like it would be a super sockeye fly. It also looks like a lot of time prepping and tying. You must live in an area with long winters, LOL.
