Default Northern European Style Tube;

I became an admirer of the Northern European tying dtyle a few years back and since then have found that some of the patterns work well here for both trout and steelhead. The fly below is one I came across and upon first look knew this one will produce fish for me here.

Click the image to open in full size.

What you see is a Pro Tube micro tube with small black cone on the front.

Tube: Pro Tube micro black with clear hook holder sleeve added
Thread: Black 0/8
Throat: Golden yellow hackle fibers
Wing: Black Angora Goat
Toppings: strands of black Krystal Flash and Peacock Herls
Cheeks: one strand of tinsel and a Jungle cock nail
Cone: Pro small black

The original pattern had no cone but I always need something to aid the flies getting down so cone it is. I have very few patterns in my boxes that include yellow but something about this combination just says 'carry at least six'.

So that's what I've been tying, my King flies are all done and regardless of the season I'm always thinking about the next steelhead I'll come in contact with.

Nice fly, Ard, reminiscent of The Tosh/ Posh Tosh which does well on the Spey every year.

Varying just the throat with orange, red, purple or blue (feathers or fur) would produce a fly 'family' for most fishy moods.

I like that one Ard, simple and practical , I bet it is going to be effective. I'm going to have to make a few of those and some variations in colors.

Have you put it in the water yet? hows it look under water (action/motion) ?

Hi Guys,

Lewis, for whatever reason orange hasn't been getting it done for me here, that goes for all orange, orange and black etc. I tied up a bunch of Willie Gunn's a few years ago and while I love the way they look in the river the salmon have ignored them. I am however a believer in the Wilkinson Sunray tube. Using those I've caught 9 steelhead and many rainbows.

Paul, they are simple and when wet they wiggle nicely unless they are streaking along too fast to undulate. I haven't used this fly but they are so similar to the Wilkinson pattern that I know how they swim along. The steelhead and salmon caught on that very cold day in November last year were caught on the Wilkinson.

You've given me an opportunity to tell a favourite story .....

A few years back I set about searching for a Victorian fly pattern, the Dusty Miller, and happened upon this tale by accident. In the late 1940s a chap called 'Dusty Miller' was tying flies for a tackle shop in Brora, N.W. Scotland. Willie Gunn, a local gillie, bought a few, caught six fish one day, four the next and bought some more of the magical fly. So, as there already existed a 'Dusty Miller' fly, this one was named after the lucky gillie, Willie Gunn, not its designer. Interesting enough, but the story went on .....

A few years later a rather posh lady was fishing on one bank of the River Brora and doing rather well for herself, when a rather forlorn character trudged past on the far bank, rod in hand.
"How are you doing?" she called.
"Not very well, Ma'am." replied the man.
"Well, you ought to try a Willie Gunn." she shouted back, hoping to be helpful.
"Madam," came the voice, "I am Willie Gunn."

Most strange your fishes not liking the fly or orange in general, Ard. How about magenta or pink throats, a la the Silver Wilkinson? Perhaps they would work?

Curiously, some years back I read on line an article by a marine biologist who had studied the pigmentation in the cones of salmon retina. He concluded that while at sea there existed a pigment which 'responded' (my term) to the colour blue but, after about 3 weeks in fresh water this pigment disappeared and blues would be seen by the fish as greys.
In the Hebrides we fish a lot of blue flies when the main run arrives but these gradually lose their effectiveness as the first weeks pass, which seems to support this thesis if only empirically.
Who knows, perhaps your fish are 'orange-blind'!

The Willie Gunn story is priceless Lewis, I mean it, that's as good a salmon fishing tale as I've ever heard!

The Wilkinson color scheme adapted to a Sunray style tube does work like a charm and as stated I own the Willie Gunn's on tubes and have fished them earnestly due to my having confidence in the overall design traits but no dice.........

Best story I've had told to me in years.

Glad you enjoyed the tale as much as I enjoy telling it.
Save the Willie Gunns for when you finally make it over the pond.

That looks like another winner for you Ard, I hope it produces some fish! It's pretty incredible how simple they are to tie.

Lewis, that's a great story, thanks for sharing! Very, very cool!

Thanks Jason,

I'm going to try pumping some activity back into this sub forum, maybe some flies followed by some fish photos will be helpful.

Lewis,

I'll give the Gunn's another go this season, it's possible I just haven't put them among the right group of fish yet

Interesting that there's no body wrapped on the tube - Most tubes I've seen have floss or mirage tinsel wrapped along the tube....

Interesting concept here.
