Default Flies for the beginner?

For a begining fly fisher, do you recommend buying an assortment pack for eastern or western waters (or several) and then adding whatever others you might find out about later? Whatever trout fishing I can do will be traveling to N. Georgia, Smokies, or the occasional trip out west. In other words, where do I start in obtaining a fly collection?

Thanks,
Eddie

assortments are a good choice for general all around flies and are a good start. When you are headed for particular water you should find a local fly shop and get recommendations on what is working well on the stream. Over time your collection will grow beyond your imagination!!

+1 for what Davo has recommended. When I travel I try to visit a local fly shop and I go in and ask for advice and I buy a few flies based on their expertise.
