Jimmie...works well if you cast near with very few false cats....unfortunately ....it twists very thin tippetsthe one with Vitafloss or cdc wings is a great fly

Thank you Ard and Pocono ! Can't wait till the hatch got a ton of these ready to go..

Hi Famill00,
To answer your question if you are going to tye this type of fly , go for a dun rooster neck and a dun hen specifically a nice young soft one that way you don't use up your more expensive dry fly neck cutting tips off for the wings.

If you want a fly that fishes well and doesn't twist the tippet I also would suggest tying up a few parachute style olives as well. Here is and example of that. I use cdc for the post and wrap the dun hackle around it.

Nice ties guys!
JP. and Allen, I feel sorry for the fish where you live.
The CDC wing works well here too.

For BWO's / Baetis, I tie a lot of different style patterns. I prefer nymphs and emergers over dries. I use CDC, Swiss Straw, Medallion Sheeting, webby portion of a Dun Hen neck, Snow Shoe Hare, Poly, Coastal Deer Hair, Widow's Web, Zelon, Sparkle Emerger Yarn, matching duck quill sections, closed cell foam, hackle tips and a few other materials I have probably forgotten - for winging...

That being said, here are some of the patterns I use for this complex:

My favorite pattern is the Bat Wing Baetis / BWO. This is the PMD version of that fly...

and THIS, is a very simple tie, using a sparkle emerger yarn wing for an emerging Baetis/BWO, that is extremely effective here in the Eastern Sierras:

Hook: Diiachi 1130, TMC 2487, # 16-#22
Thread: Gordon Griffiths grey or olive
Tail/shuck: Olive brown ice dub
Abdomen: Stalcup’s BWO goose biot
Rib: Lagartun fine gold wire
Thorax: Arizona Peacock hares ear
Wing: White Sparkle Emerger Yarn or Grey Sparkle Emerger Yarn
